Job description

The Informatics Institute (IvI) of the University of Amsterdam is implementing an ambitious growth plan, with 14 new positions. One of these new positions concerns a full professor of algorithmic data science.

The new colleague is expected to create and lead a research group within IvI and to take an active role in the further expansion of data science research, education and innovation. The position is expected to substantially extend the algorithmic data science portfolio within the Amsterdam Data Science initiative and complement current computer science strengths. Candidates should have an excellent record of internationally recognized research, of high quality education and supervision and show high potential for bridging different data science topics. Examples for the expertise of the successful candidate include, but are not limited to, affective computing, conversational systems, data-driven personalization, large-scale interactive systems, machine perception of human activity, and responsible data science.

The new colleague is expected to teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in data science as well as in artificial intelligence, and computer science, and to supervise graduate students.

Requirements

Applicants must have a PhD in computer science or a closely related discipline and meet the general requirements for a full professorship. We are looking for a creative and inspiring scientist with excellent managerial qualities and leadership capabilities. The ideal candidate has a clear vision on how to approach the current scientific challenges facing the field of data science. Applicants must have a strong record of funded research and be committed to research, teaching, and service. Applicants must be willing to actively participate in interdisciplinary research.

The salary is in accordance with the university regulations for academic personnel, and will range from €5,260 up to a maximum of €7,659 gross per month (scale H2) before tax, based on a full-time appointment (38 hours per week), depending on expertise and previous experience. Gross monthly salaries are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement (CAO) for Dutch Universities. The holiday allowance will be 8% per year and the end of year allowance 8,3%.

Informatics Institute

The Informatics Institute (IvI) actively participates in Amsterdam Data Science, an all department initiative of the University of Amsterdam, the VU University Amsterdam, the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences and the Center for Mathematics & Computer Science. Within Amsterdam Data Science, a large number of research projects on data science take place, both with a theoretical focus and with an applied, industrial or governmental focus.

Groups within IvI performing data science related research are AMLAB (led by Max Welling), the Computer Vision (CV) group (led by Theo Gevers), the Information and Language Systems (ILPS) group (led by Maarten de Rijke), the Intelligent Sensory Information Systems (ISIS) group (led by Cees Snoek), and the System and Network Engineering Research (SNE) group (led by Cees de Laat). Our combined expertise ranges from the design and analysis of algorithms and models for machine learning and their use in intelligent systems to system design in software and hardware. We move research into practice by working with industrial, governmental and societal partners and by starting spin-off companies.
