The department of Evolutionary and Population Biology (EPB), one of the four departments of the Institute of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED), is looking for a dynamic researcher (F/M) in the field of evolutionary chemical ecology with a specific interest in the evolution of sexual communication in moths. We are especially interested in candidates who can combine behavioral analyses with genetic and molecular analyses, and are keen to develop both fundamental and applied research lines. The candidate will contribute to teaching courses at BSc and MSc level for Biology, Psychobiology and Future Planet Study students.

• PhD in the field of evolutionary chemical ecology and entomology, preferably experience with research in Lepidoptera;
• experience with molecular biological techniques, preferably also with genetic analyses;
• experience with electrophysiological techniques, such as EAGs, wind tunnel bioassays, pheromone extractions and analyses;
• interest to combine laboratory and field studies with genetic and chemical analyses
• skills in experimental design and statistical analysis;
• proficiency in scientific writing and communication;
• some teaching and outreach experience;
• international experience as a PhD candidate and/or postdoctoral researcher.

We offer a position as an assistant professor for 38 hours a week in an exciting, dynamic and international research environment, starting as soon as possible (most likely 1 August 2018). The vacancy is in principle for a five-year tenure track and an initial appointment that lasts one year longer. At the start an advanced agreement will be signed between the university and the candidate, based on 'up or out'. It specifies the tenure-track requirements that need to be fulfilled in order to assess after three and five years including a promotion. The requirements in this agreement are negotiable and depend on experience and scientific profile of the selected candidate. After a positive assessment at the end of the tenure track the position will become permanent. If not the appointment will end one year later.

Depending on experience and scientific profile of the selected candidate, a permanent appointment with a probation period of two years without a tenure track agreement is negotiable.

This position is classified in the function profile Assistant professor at level 2 or 1. The full-time gross monthly salary varies between €3,475 and €5,405 gross per month, depending on relevant experience (salary scale 11/12). The Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities is applicable. The annual salary will be increased by 8 % holiday allowance and 8,3 % end-of-year bonus.

Institute of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics

The Institute of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED) is one of the eight research institutes of the Faculty of Science of the University of Amsterdam (UvA). The research at IBED aims to unravel how ecosystems function in all their complexity, and how they change due to natural processes and human activities. At its core lies an integrated systems approach to study biodiversity, ecosystems and the environment. The department of Evolutionary and Population Biology (EPB) is one of four departments within IBED and aims to improve understanding how interactions between individuals and their biotic and abiotic environment affect population dynamics and evolutionary processes, which ultimately determine speciation and biodiversity patterns. Research is integrative, combining insights from population ecology, community ecology, and evolutionary biology.
