Tilburg University is looking for an enthusiastic colleague for the position of Assistant Professor in the field of data science.

Job description

The candidate is expected to contribute to the teaching and research in the field of data science, cognitive science and artificial intelligence, specifically with regards to the Master program Data Science: Business & Governance.

Requirements

The position calls for a young ambitious scientist with a strong research and teaching background, and a PhD in areas relevant to data science, with expertise in research areas such as data analytics, machine learning, computational linguistics, data visualization, deep learning, and any other topic directly related to data science.

 

The successful candidate

  • Has a PhD in a relevant discipline and has published in international journals and/or proceedings.
  • Aspires and is able to develop and teach Bachelor and (Research) Master courses, and supervising Bachelor’s and Master’s theses.
  • Has the ability to acquire external funding for research.
  • Has proven to work well in an interdisciplinary team.
  • Has acquired (or is willing to acquire) the Basic Teaching Qualification.

 

 

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 4 years.

The position will be ranked in the Dutch university job ranking system (UFO) as assistant professor (“universitair docent”). The starting gross salary for a full-time appointment is (minimally) € 3.475,- in scale 11 up to (maximally) € 4.757,- gross per month per month (max € 66.389,- all in per year). The position is full time, with tasks divided between teaching/management (65%) and research (35%). A part-time position of 80% is negotiable.

 

The start of the employment is negotiable, preferably as near as possible to February 1, 2018. A successful 4-year candidate receives first a contract of 1 year, after a positive evaluation an extension of 3 years. A permanent position after this period is possible, depending on the success of the course programs.

 

Tilburg University is rated among the top of Dutch employers and has excellent terms of employment. Candidates from outside the Netherlands may qualify for a (temporary) tax-free allowance equal to 30% of their taxable salary. The university will apply for such an allowance on their behalf. The School and the department

As of January 2018, the School of Humanities will become the School of Humanities and Digital Sciences. One of its departments, Cognitive Science & Artificial Intelligence, emphasizes innovative cutting-edge research in those areas of cognitive science that bring together psychological and computational theories and methodologies. The department is responsible for the Bachelor and the Master program Cognitive Science & Artificial Intelligence, is co-responsible for the university-wide data science Master program Data Science: Business & Governance, and is affiliated with the Jheronimus Academy of Data Science (www.jads.nl). Members of the department have access to computer clusters, experimental lab facilities, and the virtual and mixed reality DAF Technology Lab and its sensing technologies. Moreover, the department plays a key role in Mind Labs (www.mind-labs.eu), an initiative that fosters collaborations between knowledge institutes and corporations in the field of interactive technologies and behavior.
