Global Law

Globalization poses a fundamental challenge to the discipline and practice of law. This challenge goes beyond the study of different fields of law, it demands a new way of conceptualizing law for a global era. At the center of research in this area are questions such as: How should ’law’ be conceptualized in the global network age? How does global law draw boundaries, in interaction with state law? How can the development of new regulatory modalities be orchestrated in a globalized world? How can the protection of human rights be guaranteed in a global context?

Law, Technology and Society

Technology companies have a growing influence on economic and social relations in society. Companies such as Uber and Airbnb change the way in which products and services are offered to consumers, whilst Facebook and Alphabet develop their business with the help of data obtained from consumers. Challenges that arise in this technology-driven economy are how fundamental rights and values can be safeguarded without stifling innovation. Research in this field may for example focus on labour relations, competition, consumer protection, data protection, and enforcement.

Law and sustainability

We live in an era that is also referred to as the Anthropocene. Human beings have a dominant influence on the world around us. In this context we have to deal with the challenges of climate change and sustainability. Legal questions that arise in this context are for example: How can law and governance respond to the challenges of climate change and sustainability? What could be the role of law in developing positive strategies for sustainability?

Safety and Security

Conflicts and wars, in combination with technological developments, have given rise to a new front of criminal activity and terrorism. Society and citizens are vulnerable and questions arise as to how we can guarantee safety and security. The role of law in this context is complex: on the one hand the law is a crucial instrument for local and global actors in the pursuit of security goals; on the other hand, sanctions imposed by governments can on occasion test the limits of the national and international rule of law. Research in this area can for example focus on international (human rights) law, criminal law, or victimology.

Candidates for the position must have the following qualifications:

• Hold a doctoral degree in Law (PhD).
• evidence of sustained research achievement, reflected in peer-reviewed publications;
• Have a clear and well-developed strategy for future outstanding research that will result in leading publications.
• Be willing to engage in collaborative research with related research centers at TiU.
• Genuine interest in performing in an interdisciplinary research environment;
• Have experience in attracting external funding, autonomously or in collaboration with others.
• excellence, or the potential for excellence, in teaching students, and a strong and demonstrable commitment to the organization and delivery of teaching.
• experience in assisting students and PhD’s and also being a coach and a role model for students, postdocs and associate professors.
• Strong command of Dutch or the willingness to learn within 2 years.
• Strong command of English (minimal C2 level).
• Evidence of having successfully held a position of academic leadership.
• Have experience in undertaking administrative and managerial duties (e.g. management of projects and scientific personnel, organization of workshops etc).
• Have excellent interpersonal and strong and effective communication skills.

The candidate is expected:

• To meet the criteria in terms of research quality, teaching quality, management responsibilities, proven valorization of their research and active role as member of department;
• To take an active role as role model and diversity agent in the university (e.g. by delivering a public lecture; by making research available for a larger audience; by mentoring junior women faculty).

Fixed-term contract: 5 years.

The five-year Philip Eijlander Diversity Program comprises:

• A 5 year appointment, with the perspective of a permanent contract
• A gross annual salary commensurate with experience and in accordance with Dutch national standards for the respective level of (associate) professorship;
• A start-up research grant of € 10.000;
• A networking/coaching program to facilitate the career path of the fellow;
• Tilburg University offers competitive European salaries. For researchers coming from outside the Netherlands, the university can apply for a tax-free allowance equal to 30% of taxable salary under certain conditions. The university offers very good fringe benefits.
