Employer

Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam

Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU) is a leading, innovative and growing university that is at the heart of society and actively contributes to new developments in teaching and research. Our university has ten faculties, and provides work for over 4,500 staff and scientific education for more than 23,000 students.

Department

The Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS) is one of the larger faculties of the Vrije Universiteit. Over 2.500 students and more than 250 employees are engaged in teaching and research on social-science issues. The faculty has 5 bachelor- and 7 master programs. In addition to Sociology, the faculty offers bachelor and master programs in anthropology, political science and public administration, communication science and organization science. The main focus of research is societal resilience (see http://www.fsw.vu.nl/en/research/institute-for-societal-resilience/).

The Department of Political Science and Public Administration is committed to high quality academic education and research. Our educational programmes include political science (Bachelor and Master), governance and organisation (bachelor), public administration (master), law and politics of international security (master, with the Law Faculty) and a new international programme  Philosophy, Politics and Economics (bachelor, with the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration). Our research focuses on public governance issues and is organized in two programmes (Multi-level governance; New modes of public governance). Additionally, the Department participates actively in the newly established research institute at the Faculty of Social Sciences: The Institute for Societal Resilience.

The Department seeks a chair in Political Behavior in Europe. The ideal candidate for the chair in Political Behavior in Europe has a strong record in research and teaching on the way political behavior and attitudes evolve as a response to the internationalization of politics. Thematically the focus of the candidate’s work would preferably be on Europe, and involve both within-state and across-state analysis of political behavior and attitudes. The chair holder will cooperate closely with the two core chairs in political science and international relations and their teams by linking his/her research on political behavior and attitudes to research on the democratic and just governance of the European Union, and on the external relations of the European Union and its member states. The chair will also cooperate with the chairs in public administration by providing a broader European context to research on Dutch politics and administration. The command of the Dutch language and familiarity of the Dutch political system are therefore an advantage. The ideal candidate has a distinctive command of advanced methods of large-n, statistical analysis that is supported by the publication and teaching record. S/he is able to position his/her work in relation to the broader discipline of political science, including more international and more theoretical issues, and engages with other disciplines in the social sciences.
