Job description

Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, in collaboration with Stichting Historia Medicinae (SHM), offers an endowed chair in Medical History. Aim of this chair is to support and further develop research and education in the history of health, illness, health care and medicine in their social, cultural and scientific contexts.  The professor of Medical history will have a leading role in the VU Medical History programme, educating students from medicine and history in an interdisciplinary and international classroom. The candidate has an excellent track record in medical history research, has demonstrated the ability to attract funding for research projects, and is a committed advisor of junior scholars. The candidate will collaborate with colleagues of the Faculties of Humanities and Medicine, and participate in relevant research institutes (e.g. CLUE+, Stevin Center).

• Participate in and help to further develop the MA Medical History programme;
• Perform research on a high international level;
• Attract funding for research projects;
• Function as advisor for PhD’s and graduate students;
• Function as an ambassador for medical history in the Netherlands and abroad.

Requirements

• Has an excellent track record in research, visible through publications, projects, and other activities in the field of medical history, with a demonstrated interest in the history of science/knowledge in a broader sense;
• Has the capacity to initiate new research, attract funding, and to supervise PhD candidates;
• Will participate in the educational program in Medical History;
• Is an inspiring teacher, fluent in English, and committed to educate students from various disciplines in an international classroom;

Conditions of employment

The chair is an endowed chair, on behalf of the Stichting Historia Medicinae. The appointment will be initially for five years.  After satisfactory evaluation of the initial appointment, it can be extended for a another five years.

This is a unpaid position. There is a budget of € 5000,00 each year for research, travel and other costs.

Department

The Faculty of Humanities has three Departments: Art & Culture, History, Antiquity; Language, Literature & Communication; Philosophy. The endowed chair of Medical History is established in the Department of Art & Culture, History, Antiquity. This department offers programs in three domains: Art history and cultural sciences; History; Antiquity studies (ancient history, archaeology, classical languages). The staff members also participate in the VU Graduate School of Humanities. Their research is organized in the two interfaculty research institutes CLUE+ and Network Institute. Both in teaching and research the department has a dedicated interdisciplinary approach.
The Faculty of Humanities offers a one semester specialization in Medical History, a track of the Master History programme (masters.vu.nl/en/programmes/history). This specialization is a collaboration between various Dutch universities and Medical Centers. This - formerly Dutch language - programme will be taught in English as from 2018.
