Job description

This position is within the research program which adopts a strong interdisciplinary and international orientation to research, theory, and methods.  It focuses on the psychological, evolutionary, and neuroscientific mechanisms of trust, emotion, and cooperation among individuals and groups.
 
The candidate is expected to (a) develop a strong, innovating program of research; (b) acquire external grant funding to support their research, (c) conduct excellent teaching, (d) show departmental citizenship, and (e) engage in valorisation activities. The candidate contributes to major parts of the Section’s teaching programs, and supervises Bachelor’s, Master’s, and, where possible, PhD students.

Requirements

• Completed PhD-thesis in the social, evolutionary, or behavioral sciences;
• Fit with research program, with its focus on trust, emotion, and human cooperation;
• Expertise in social neuroscience (e.g., fMRI, EEG, hormones) or psychophysiological measurement  techniques is desired;
• Demonstrated methodological skills and expertise with advanced statistics
• Demonstrated ability to publish in peer-reviewed academic journals; 
• Demonstrated ability to acquire external research funding is a plus;
• Teaching experience (as evidenced by excellent teaching evaluations);
• Excellent communication and organizational skills.

Conditions of employment

The appointment will be full-time for a period of  5 years. The desired starting date is  September 1st 2018, although later starting dates are negotiable. The position may be transferred to Tenure Track pending change in financial prospects. The salary will be in accordance with university regulations for academic personnel, and depending on experience, range from a minimum of € 3475,00 gross per month up to a maximum of € 4757,00 gross per month, (salary scale 11) based on a fulltime employment. The position will also include additional funding for conducting research and travelling to conferences.

The Faculty of Behavioural and Movement Sciences (FBM) at VU University Amsterdam is unique in the wide field of behavioural and health sciences for combining the disciplines of psychology, education theory and human movement sciences. The faculty contributes to a better understanding of the way behaviour and movement are caused and can be influenced so as to promote physical and mental health and improve performance.
 
Members in in the Section of Social Psychology at the Department of Experimental and Applied Psychology (www.vupsy.nl/) investigate themes such as trust, leadership, cooperation, evolutionary psychology, emotion, culture, group and intergroup dynamics, justice, and relationships, using innovating theoretical approaches and methodologies grounded in psychology and beyond (e.g., economic games, genetics, meta-analyses, neuroscience).
 
The Department provides a vibrant, international research climate with high quality academic staff and students who are supported by excellent research facilities (e.g., multiple labs for experimental research, equipment for neuroscience measures), and expertise in statistics. The Department has a strong international reputation in psychological science, as indicated by excellent research assessments, high quality publications, high standards for teaching and mentoring, and frequent visits by international scientists.
 
Social Psychology has a strong commitment to theory development, innovative research, and applications to dyads, groups, and society. Research and teaching have a strong international and interdisciplinary orientation to the broad and interrelated topics of trust, emotion, and human cooperation. The Section participates in various research institutes and graduate schools (Institute for Brain and Behavior, Kurt Lewin Institute, Netherlands Science Centre for Criminology), and offers a 2-year Research Master program in Social Psychology which has been formally recognized as an “excellent-quality” program.
