The SensLog project
Innovative sensors enable capturing large amounts of data about freight flows and are more and more applied in practice. To reap the benefits of sensory data, the VU Logistics Research Group has set up a project with leading industry partners Itude Mobile and ORTEC on three topics: to develop models and decision support tools for sensor placement and sensor repositioning strategies, generate predictive models for logistics operations; to improve logistics performance; and to develop suitable offline and online algorithms to reschedule/re-route logistics operations. This project is partially funded by the Dutch Institute for Advanced Logistics (Dinalog). For this project, we are looking for 2 postdoctoral colleagues to join the research group.

We are looking for candidates who have a research interest in the interface between logistics, optimization and/or data mining and machine learning methods. More specifically we look for candidates who have:
• completed (or nearly completed) their PhD thesis;
• a background in computer science, applied mathematics, industrial engineering, logistics, operations research or quantitative operations management;
• publications and/or working papers in relevant domains;
• a strong interest in working on applied problems;
• a commitment to doing high quality scientific research on real-life problems and data;
• good communication skills (written and oral) and the ability to interact successfully with industry and academic partners.

We offer a unique opportunity for postdoctoral researchers to work on challenging real-life problems using real-life data. The SensLog project is supported by two leading technology firms (Itude Mobile and ORTEC), with which you will interact frequently. You will get the opportunity to visit international partner universities to perform part of this research and will be able to participate in teaching to help prepare for your future academic career. The initial appointment will be for a period of two years.

The salary will be in accordance with university regulations for academic personnel, and depending on experience, range from a minimum of € 2.588 up to a maximum of € 4.084 based on full-time employment. VU Logistics Research Group
The logistics research group of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam focuses on solving real-life problems in distribution logistics, including performance analysis, distribution and transport network optimization, and supply chain coordination. On these themes, the research group has acquired national and international research grants. The group operates in a strong international research and industry network, participates in various national and international research projects and regularly organizes international conferences and workshops. Group members collaborate with leading researchers at several international universities. The research output of the group is published in leading academic journals in the field.
