The project

The VIRION consortium

The Viruses, Immune stimulation and RNA Interference in Oncology – Network (VIRION) consortium is a Marie Sklodowska-Curie European Industrial Doctorate (EID)-Initial Training Network (ITN) within the EU Horizon2020 programme, aiming to train five Early Stage Researchers (ESR) within a collaborative academic and commercial research network. Partners in the VIRION network are the VU University medical center (VUmc) and ORCA Therapeutics, both located in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and TILT Biotherapeutics, located in Helsinki, Finland. Each of the ESRs participating in the VIRION ITN-EID network will be hosted by one of these three partners and will be seconded for a certain period of time to other partners so that he or she will have experience with research in both an academic and commercial setting. All five ESRs will finalize their training by defending a thesis in order to obtain a PhD degree from the VU University in Amsterdam.

The Project

The VIRION EID consortium is focused on the development of a novel therapeutic regime by combining immunotherapy with oncolytic virotherapy and RNA interference techniques. Oncolytic viruses are developed to specifically target and destroy tumour cells. In pre-clinical models, oncolytic adenoviruses have proven a powerful tool in the elimination of tumours, not only by their direct lytic effects but also by their triggering of subsequent tumour inflammation and enhanced lymphocytic infiltration. VIRION will address how these immune responses can be further enhanced by addition of immune-modulatory factors and/or siRNA targeting tumour genes that play an immune suppressive role in the microenvironment of melanoma.

Your challenge

As PhD Student in VIRION, your main tasks and responsibilties are:

  • To screen for and test the effects of immunomodulatory factors, genes and siRNAs on the activation of myeloid cells and T cells in in-vitro, ex-vivo and in-vivo model systems;
  • To construct and evaluate novel oncolytic adenoviruses for their ability to 1) lyse tumour cells, 2) overcome immune suppression and 3) stimulate an immune response;
  • Perform demanding and advanced immunological analyses including but not limited to FACS, IHC and ELISPOT in vitro and on in vivo substrates;
  • Validate the findings in clinical melanoma single-cell suspensions and an in-vivo tumour model;
  • Acquire knowledge and skills to perform biomedical research in both an academic and a commercial setting;
  • Complete your research with peer-reviewed scientific publications and a PhD thesis.

Functie-eisen

We are looking for PhD Students with the following background and experience:

  • You hold a Master’s degree or equivalent from an accredited academic programme in Biomedical or Molecular Sciences, Immunology, or Medicine;
  • You have demonstrable experience with cell culture and various molecular, virological and immunological techniques;
  • You are able to work independently and take initiatives, but at the same time you are able to work in a team and to be communicative;
  • You have excellent English speaking, reading and writing skills;
  • Over the last three years you did not reside, study or work for more than 12 months in Finland or The Netherlands.

Initial interviews will be held through Skype, following interviews will be held in person, in Amsterdam, in October 2015.

Arbeidsvoorwaarden

PhD positions are for a total period of three years. Salary scale and added benefits will be according to EU and national regulations for PhD students. Usual Marie Sklodowska-Curie ITN living and mobility allowances apply.

Dienstverband: Temporary, three years
