Job description

The Molecular Ecology research group at the Laboratory of Microbiology (chair Willem M. de Vos) seeks to recruit a PhD student in gut microbial ecology. The aim of the PhD project is to understand bacteria-host interactions through post-genomic analysis of the human gut and it’s microbiome. A major focus is on understanding how the bacterium Akkermansia muciniphila regulates gene expression in its natural environment, and the impact of this organism on host response.

 

The project

 

The mucin-degrading bacterium A. muciniphila is now known to colonize a substantial part of the human population and has potential to be developed as a biomarker for a healthy intestine. In this study we want to obtain insight in to the abundance, diversity and activity of Akkermansia spp, in humans. We want to analyze the dynamics of A. muciniphila gene expression and that of the host. The project is part of an Advanced Grant of the European Research Council (ERC) awarded to Willem M. de Vos, and includes an innovative and interdisciplinary research team.

The supervision of this project will be managed by: Prof.dr. W.M. de Vos; and Dr. C. Belzer

Requirements

Candidates should have (or have obtained before March 2012) a Masters degree or equivalent in a Life Sciences discipline (such as Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Molecular Life Sciences). Fluency in English (both spoken and written), proactive communication and problem solving as part of a team, strong record keeping, a great work ethics, and initiative are essential characteristics. Previous experience in a microbiology laboratory as part of the degree or otherwise is an advantage. Experience with classical (bacterial isolation) and modern molecular methods for microbial analyses, computational analysis of pyrosequencing data, genomics, and/or phylogenetic analysis as well as bioinformatics and biostatistics approaches are highly desirable. 



Conditions of employment

A PhD position for a period of 18 months, extended with another 30 months upon favorable evaluation. Gross salary will increase from € 2042,- in the first year up to € 2612,- in the last year based on a full-time appointment (38 hours per week). We not only offer a competitive salary but also good (study) leave and a pension of the ABP Pension Fund.
