Functiebeschrijving

We are looking for a highly motivated and inquisitive Post-doc researcher to connect field based physical geography (soil science, geomorphology and hydrology) to remotely sensed imagery to enable the assessment of catchment system dynamics. To understand the system dynamics insights in soil properties and water and sediment transfer in landscapes is needed. Detailed assessment of the landscape will be done using drone based imagery. This information will be used to develop nature based solutions for river restoration and fire affected lands.
The research is part of the Unmanned Aerial Remote Sensing Facility (UARSF) of Wageningen University and Research which aims at developing innovation in the field of UAV remote sensing science by providing a platform for dedicated and high-quality experiments. The facility has a large range of platforms and camera systems available, and consists of an interdisciplinary team of researchers focusing on solutions for scientific challenges but also looking forward to value adding products and services. The Post-Doc will be working within the Interreg project SPECTORS (Sensor Products for Enterprises Creating Technological Opportunities in airborne Remote Sensing) aiming at the development of a remote sensing infrastructure using state-of-the-art sensors on UAVs to develop products and services for environmental applications. The SPECTORS project is a consortium of 20 German and Dutch partners consisting of universities, research organizations and companies.

The candidate should be a creative and independent researcher with a PhD degree with a strong background in both physical geography as well as remote sensing with affinity to methodology development and practical implementation of scientific findings in management. The postdoc should contribute to the UAV image processing towards high resolution DEMs and implement algorithms in relevant (open source) software and programming environments (e.g., Matlab, R, Python). Experience with designing, managing and executing field experiments is a requirement while operational knowledge of UAV based systems is an asset. This also includes the actual execution of flights with UAVs. Good communication and collaborative skills, and fluent in English are required. Application and development of methods for soil quality assessment and evaluation of soil erosion are expected, as well as skills in handling of spatial data and its analysis.
