Functiebeschrijving

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) has been circulating for many years in eastern and southern Europe, but the first human cases in The Netherlands were only detected in 2016. The important question that needs to be addressed is whether this virus can actually become established in local communities of rodents (mice, voles) and/or larger grazers (deer), how this is driven by tick population dynamics and eventually whether the Dutch ecosystem provides a suitable environment for further spread of the disease. In collaboration with Artemis One Health (https://www.artemisonehealth.com/), the project at the Laboratory of Entomology will investigate these unresolved questions, using a combination of experimental work on transmission dynamics (vector competence, host preference) and field work on tick and host ecology. The obtained parameters and habitat information will be used to develop environmental niche models to assess the suitability of the Dutch ecosystem to sustain TBE transmission.

Functie-eisen

You have a PhD degree in Ecology, Entomology or related field. We are looking for a candidate with ample experience in the biology of ticks or other blood feeding arthropods. A strong affinity with modelling is highly desirable. As the project involves various stakeholders, such as the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) and land owners, we expect a candidate who can work independently, is a good communicator, as well as a good organizer, and is a teamplayer within a larger group of scientists. Qualification for applying for ethical approval of laboratory and field work with small and larger mammals is desired.

Arbeidsvoorwaarden

A full-time position (38 hours) for three years. Gross salary per month maximum
€ 4028,= for a fulltime appointment, dependent on training and experience.
Hay-profile: researcher 4.

Dienstverband: Temporary, Onbekend

Werkgever

Wageningen UR

The position is embedded in the Laboratory of Entomology of Wageningen University. The research interests of the One Health Entomology group within the Laboratory are to understand the factors that determine the presence and/or emergence of vector-borne diseases and to unravel the underlying mechanisms from molecular to ecosystem level. With this knowledge, the group ultimately aims to design novel strategies for vector control that are affordable, safe for human use, and sustainable in the context of our changing environment. The team consists of ambitious scientists that employ interdisciplinary approaches, both in the lab as well as in the field.
