We are looking for a computer scientist / software developer specialized in Web Services and Geo-computation with affinity for soil information and soil data management. Major duties are to:
  • develop web-based services for ISRIC data products, such as WoSIS, SoilGrids and future products. This includes the building of user interfaces for data export and data import using Web3.0 technologies, Web Mapping Services, Web Feature Services and Web Processing Services;
  • assist in optimising geo-computation processes (big raster and vector data operations) used to develop ISRIC's global spatial data products;
  • develop distributed systems (e.g. parallel programming, cloud computation);
  • maintain and develop a UML schema for XML data exchange in the soil domain.

Functie-eisen

The successful candidate by preference has:
  • preferable a PhD degree (or a MSc degree with comparable experience) in computer science and/or Geoinformation science or similar with good demonstrated experience in above mentioned topics;
  • awareness of the state of the art in IT and software development, and a strong sense for innovation;
  • experience with software development: programming languages Python, R and/or JAVA;
  • experience with the Linux operating system administration;
  • extensive experience with geo-computation using R / Python / shell scripting with OSGeo software (raster and vector operations) in distributed systems (parallel programming, cloud computation etc.);
  • experience with OGC web services (WMS, WFS, WCS, WPS), REST architecture (WSDL/SOAP architecture also) and Application Schema;
  • experience with software development methods like Agile and test-driven development.
You will work for both internal clients (product developers at ISRIC) and external clients and you will cooperate with colleague computer scientists in an international setting (e.g. to develop the SoilML data exchange schema). Therefore we are looking for a pleasant colleague with good communication skills and a strong personality. You have good command of English and preferably working knowledge of either French, Spanish or Dutch.

Arbeidsvoorwaarden

We offer a challenging position in an international working environment with a diverse, experienced and motivated team at a renowned institute in the field of soil information, based on the campus of Wageningen University. You will be embedded in larger team of software developers connected to the Environmental Science Group of Wageningen University and Research Centre, strongly focussing on IT innovations for environmental challenges.

The position will be a full time position on a temporary basis for a period of 1.5 years, with a prospect of extension after successful evaluation. A part-time assignment of a minimum of 4 days per week is negotiable. Salary depends on knowledge and experience with a minimum of € 3427.= and a maximum of €5330,- gross per month (Dutch university pay scale 11/12), based on full-time (38 hours) employment

ISRIC has a mission to serve the international community with information about the world's soil resources to help addressing major global issues. ISRIC is the International Council for Science (ICSU) accredited World Data Centre for Soils (WDC-Soils) since 1989 and it maintains the World Soil Museum.
