Wageningen University & Research

We are
The Land Use Planning Group is part of the Department of Environmental Sciences of Wageningen University. The Department's research and education concerns our living environment: nature, landscape, agriculture, mitigation and adaptation to climate change, urbanization, and competing claims on space.
In the research of the Land Use group a central role is assigned to the way how land is distributed over the various competing claims. We develop planning theory, approaches, and instruments which may enhance the resilience of urban and rural landscapes. In order to do so we analyse the interplay between natural and social processes, but also do research into governance processes around spatial planning and land use change. We study how landscapes respond to societal processes, how in turn people respond to landscape change, and how they decide to intervene through technological solutions and policy measures for relevant land use planning issues. Important research themes are land markets, land use change, climate change and adaptation, sustainable food systems, urbanisation, innovation in planning, and landscape governance. In doing so, the Land Use Planning Group represents and contributes to Wageningen University's mission for quality of life.
