Job description

Wageningen University & Research (WUR) is recruiting a full professor to lead the Microbiology Chair Group. This position provides you with the opportunity to further develop your own research line and your leadership profile. Together with the other senior staff, you are responsible for the academic and operational management of this Chair Group. You will define the research strategy, lead the team of scientists, lecturers and support staff, and further strengthen the prominent position of the chair. You are also responsible for teaching and innovations in BSc, MSc and PhD courses in fundamental and applied aspects of microbiology with the objective to further improve WUR as an attractive place for students to study.

The chair of Microbiology (MIB)
MIB currently consists of 65 scientists, including 6 professors, 35 PhD students and 10 post docs. The chair group is efficiently organised and supported by dedicated secretarial, financial and HR advisors.
The research topics focus on the analysis of microbial activity in complex environments such as the soil, aquatic environments and human & mammalian gut. This also includes the interaction between microbes and other organisms, and consequences of microbial activity for human and animal health. The general scientific objectives of MIB include (i) elucidate fundamental aspects of selected microbe-based model systems at ecological, cellular and molecular levels, (ii) understand the molecular basis of key physiological processes in bacteria, archaea and their viruses, and (iii) apply the obtained insights to develop and optimise processes improving the quality of life. The current research groups are each devoted to particular aspects of the broad research field of microbiology but collaborate extensively with each other. Your own research line is expected to be synergistic and complementary to these research topics. The group is centrally positioned in the scientific community and collaborates in many local, national and international partnerships and consortia. It has an outstanding international reputation and is highly productive, achieving the highest possible metrics. MIB has a broad portfolio of project funding and is financially sound. The chair is well organised. MIB makes a major effort to communicate their activities in research in scientific journals and education programmes as well as to society (e.g. national TV, radio and newspapers). Many patents and spin-outs have been generated, and MIB operates in close collaboration with industry.
