Job description

This professorship is a key appointment for the department of Psychiatry and his /her research will fall under the theme Stress-related Disorders of the Radboudumc. Next to her/his role within the department of psychiatry and the Radboudumc, the candidate will support the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behavior as a whole in its efforts to bridge the gap between clinical needs in stress-related mental disorders on the one hand, and cognitive neuroscience research on the other hand. The post aims to advance the understanding of individual differences in (mal)adaptive behaviour and the translation of insights to clinical practice, in order to personalize prevention and treatment in line with the core goals of the Radboudumc.

The post holder will treat and study common as well as differentiating neurocognitive domains of stress-related mental disorders as well as treatment response using a combination of functional and structural MRI, electrophysiology, neuroimaging and experimental cognitive markers and neuromodulatory stimulation.

Main duties
  • The professor is expected to play a major leadership role in the research activity of the department of psychiatry and the Donders Institute, to undertake original work independently and/or in collaboration with others;
  • The professor will provide clinical care and clinical leadership by integrating clinical activities with different stake holders like other Radboudumc departments, peripheral clinical centers and relevant companies;
  • The professor will be required to play a leading role in the development and co-ordination of stress-related research and patient care, which is a major area for growth at the Radboudumc and the Donders Institute;
  • The professor will be required to obtain research grants and other funding to carry out a research program;
  • The professor is expected to play a role in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching by giving lectures and tours, and supervising students in their research by advice or informal instruction;
  • The professor is required to supervise graduate students and psychiatry trainees in patient care;
  • The professor is expected to provide effective management leadership within her or his professional and academic areas and to contribute to university committees on behalf of the department and the institute, as required.

Requirements

  • A proven track record as a first class internationally recognized researcher, with evidence of well-cited original publications in high impact journals;
  • A proven track record of clinical expertship and translation to clinical training in psychiatry;
  • The ability to lead a well-established research group in the field of clinical neuroscience;
  • Evidence of securing independent research funding;
  • Strong potential to develop productive interactions with other scientists and clinicians at the Radboud university medical center and the Donders Institute;
  • Interests that are synergistic with the existing strengths of the department of psychiatry of the Radboudumc and the Donders Institute. Research focus should be on (comorbid) stress-related disorders;
  • Commitment and ability to provide effective teaching at undergraduate, master and postgraduate level (BKO or equivalent);
  • Excellent and effective written and oral communication skills.

The department of Psychiatry is part of the Radboudumc and participates in the Donders Institute. The department has an excellent reputation with respect to unraveling the pathophysiology of stress-related and neurodevelopmental disorders, which for the first time within the Netherlands and even Europe allows us to realize a chair in clinical neuroscience in psychiatry, with a real cross-talk between bench and bedside and vice versa.

The departmental high quality patient care in combination with electrophysiology, neuroimaging as well as experimental cognitive markers and neuromodulatory stimulation will be unique tools of this chair in clinical neuroscience. This allows patient care and clinical research to be carried out at the highest international standards at our university. In collaboration with the Donders Institute the department of Psychiatry offers a well-established patient cohort (MIND-Set) which hosts a wide array of state-of-the-art research infrastructure including an imaging center for in vivo neuroimaging, and a TMS lab in collaboration with the outpatient clinic.
