This two-year project will explore the future of cars and interactive systems, with a focus on creating intelligent and emotion-aware systems that can contribute to better automotive user interfaces. This joint-industrial position provides a unique research opportunity of working on real-world problems in the automotive domain.

We are looking for two excellent postdoctoral researchers, one in human-computer interaction (HCI) and the other in machine learning / ubiquitous computing (UbiComp), with interest in doing research on physiological sensing and affective computing in an automotive context. The appointment is for two years, with a possibility of extension.

Candidates are required to have a PhD degree in computer science or related field, and expected to have an excellent command of English, with good academic writing and presentation skills. Position specific requirements:

1. HCI position:

We invite applications from outstanding individuals with a suitable background in human-computer interaction, computer science, (electrical) engineering, data sciences, or cognitive science. This position will involve working with users in a driving simulator and/or test track setting, physical prototyping with physiological sensors, designing and running controlled (simulator) studies, and drawing on both quantitative and qualitative analysis methods.

We expect candidates to have excellent programming skills (C/C++, Java, Python), familiar with physical prototyping (e.g., Arduino), wearable (e.g., eye tracker, EDA sensor) and camera-based sensors, and have published at CHI, IMWUT/UbiComp, IEEE Intelligent Vehicles Symposium, AutomotiveUI, or other related venues. Experience with Unity is a plus.

1. ML/UbiComp position:

We invite applications from outstanding individuals with a suitable background in computer science, data sciences, neuroscience, or cognitive science. This position will involve developing signal processing and learning algorithms, drawing on recent advances in machine learning for affective and attentional state classification and/or regression, using image and physiological data. This may involve delving into generative models for data augmentation, or exploring robust multi-modal fusion methods.

We expect candidates to have excellent programming skills (C/C++, Python), have experience in machine (deep) learning (Scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch) and computer vision (OpenCV), be familiar with physiological sensor data, and have published at IMWUT/UbiComp, Multimedia, ICIP, CVPR, or other related venues. Experience with time series data is a plus.

The terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Research Centres ("CAO-onderzoeksinstellingen"). The gross monthly salary for an employee on a full time basis, depending on relevant work experience, ranges from € 3,560 to € 4,339. The appointment will be for a period of two years.

Employees are also entitled to a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary and a year-end bonus of 8.33%. CWI offers attractive working conditions, including flexible scheduling.

Research group: Distributed and Interactive Systems

The Distributed and Interactive Systems (DIS) group from CWI: Future multimedia systems will be intelligent and empathic, capable of understanding the user and the environment. Extending techniques from distributed networking and contextual modeling, the DIS group adapts and extends traditional research on multimedia systems from this new perspective. Our research questions not only address how fast bits are delivered, but also how well they are utilized. We combine data science with a strong human-centric, empirical approach. This results in a full-stack methodology that enables us to bridge socio-technical gaps in society and science, by instrumenting the appropriate infrastructures and communication protocols using realistic testing grounds.
