Job description

We seek an enthusiastic and ambitious assistant professor to strengthen our research and education on Artificial Intelligence, Health Data Science and Learning Health System. The department of medical informatics (Klinische Informatiekunde (KIK) in Dutch) of the Amsterdam UMC, location AMC, aims to contribute to better healthcare by research on support and evaluation of patient care, based on methods from informatics, computer science, epidemiology, biostatistics and related disciplines. The department is deeply involved in the development and provision of educational programs at the Faculty of Medicine: a 3-years Bachelor (in Dutch) and 2-years Master (in English) Medical Informatics, an online part-time executive Master Health Informatics (for healthcare professionals) and the Bachelor- and Master programs in Medicine. The research of the department is under responsibility of 4 full professors and covers the following topics: Health Data Science; predictive and  etiological models; natural language processing; semantic interoperability; decision support and audit& feedback to professionals and patients; evaluation of information systems; evaluation of quality of care; and user-centered design. Together these topics form chains of the learning health system which can be considered as improving healthcare by using knowledge and routinely collected patient data. The assistant professor will lecture 50% of his/her time. Besides, he/she will coordinate and participate in an integrative research project on renal diseases, intensive care or cardiology. One possible focus of this research could be prediction models based on structured and unstructured (i.e., text) patient data using semantics from medical ontologies and knowledge from the literature.

Requirements

You have completed training at PhD-level in a relevant field, e.g., computer science, AI, medical informatics. You have 2-8 years of experience with supervision of students / junior researchers, with working in an international research setting or a business setting. Preferably you have experience in writing grant proposals. You have hands-on skills in working with Python, R, and preferably other programming languages and semantic web tools (such as Protégé). Understanding of the specifics of data, knowledge and ontologies in healthcare is advantageous. You have experience in lecturing and development of educational material. You have a Basis Kwalificatie Onderwijs (BKO) or are willing to obtain this. You are a strong collaborator but also able to work independently without being solitary. You are curious, creative, and solution-driven, combining a drive to understand with an intent to make things work. Your English speaking and writing skills are excellent evidenced by lectures, scientific presentations and journal publications. Your Dutch proficiency is good (B2), or you are willing to learn Dutch within two years. You are able to communicate with a broad audience, including clinicians and technicians. You are accurate and ambitious and flexible in time and location.

Conditions of employment

We offer a position that challenges you to further develop the field and yourself. We provide training, for example via the AMC learning portal, and (inter)national courses and conferences. You will be employed with AMC Medical Research BV (AMR) for 1 year with an intended extension afterwards at Amsterdam UMC. The salary conforms to the collective labor agreement (CAO) of the University Medical Centers. The monthly salary will range between €3.808,- and €5.944,-.
