Job description

PhD or Postdoc position: The role of gut microbiota in immune senescence and cardiovascular diseases

The Departments of Genetics and Pediatrics, at the University Medical Center Groningen, the Netherlands, are looking for a potential PhD student or junior postdoc in the field of bioinformatics to assess the contributions of microbiome-derived signals in the etiology of age- and obesity-related cardio-metabolic diseases through (immune) senescence.

The candidate will investigate the role of gut microbiota composition in immune senescence, predisposition to cardiovascular diseases, and its relation to host genome, environment and lifestyle. This project is a part of “Inflammatory Reprogramming by Ageing and Microbiome - Targets for Treatment of Cardiovascular Disease”, a large, national project funded by CVON (CardioVascular Onderzoek Nederland). This project involves multi-omics integration in multiple human cohorts and assesses the impact of the gut microbiota, immunological parameters related to ageing and risk to CVD.

Requirements

- M.Sc. (or PhD) degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, systems biology or a comparable discipline. The candidate with experiences in microbiome, metabolism and immunity is preferable.
- Experience with advanced statistics, biology or biochemistry
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Fluency in English

The UMCG has a preventive Hepatitis B policy. The UMCG can provide you with the vaccination, should it be required for your position.

In case of specific professions a ‘Certificate of Good Conduct’ is required.

Conditions of employment

PhD
You will be appointed as a PhD candidate in the Dutch University job-ranking system (UFO). Duration of the PhD project lasts 4 years. The successful candidate will first be offered a temporary position of one year with the option of renewal for another three years upon evaluation.

Your salary will be a maximum of € 3.020,- gross per month (PhD scale), depending on your qualifications and relevant experience, based on a fulltime appointment. In addition, the UMCG will offer you 8% holiday pay and 8.3% end-of-year bonus. The conditions of employment comply with the Collective Labour Agreement for Medical Centres (CAO-UMC).

Postdoc
Your salary will be a maximum of € 4.361,- gross per month (scale 10), depending on your qualifications and relevant experience, based on a fulltime appointment. In addition, the UMCG will offer you 8% holiday pay and 8.3% end-of-year bonus. The conditions of employment comply with the Collective Labour Agreement for Medical Centres (CAO-UMC).
