Job description

A four-year PhD/AIO position is available in the lab of dr. Mark Hipp in the section Molecular Cell biology, department of BSCS.
Protein aggregation is associated with neurodegeneration and many other age-related pathologies. We have recently demonstrated that the nuclear environment interferes with protein aggregation and disfavors aberrant interactions of aggregation-prone proteins with endogenous factors (Woerner et al., Science 2016). The aim of this project is to characterize the quality control components in the nucleus that prevent aggregation-mediated toxicity, and develop methods to exploit their protective functions. To do this we will study the fate of disease related mutant proteins and artificial model substrates in the nuclei of yeast and cultured mammalian cells, and develop markers/sensors to characterize the cellular response to the presence of these proteins.

Department

Biomedical Sciences of Cells & Systems (BSCS)

The Department of Biomedical Sciences of Cells and Systems (BSCS) conducts human biology research and teaching at sector O&O of the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG). The department is composed of four sections and the studies within the department focused on understanding basic functions and processes of the cell & systems and how they lead to disease if disturbed. The specific research program of the section Molecular Cell biology constitutes several aspects of cell biology, including protein homeostasis, protein complex remodeling, and organelle maintenance and sorting. Model systems include yeast, mammalian cell and (patient-derived) iPS cell models, somatic stem cells, organoids and organotypic slice models, and Drosophila and mouse models. Diseases studied encompass neurodegenerative diseases, (cardio)myopathies, gastroenterological diseases, dermatological diseases and oncology. The department is embedded in Graduate School Medical Sciences (GSMS) and the Research School BCN.
