Job description

We are looking for a new full professor that can make an important contribution to our department in the area of quantitative data analytics. The position involves setting up a new research group and developing a research line in the specific area and contributing to teaching in the domain. Keywords for the position include (but are not limited to) machine learning, statistical learning, data analytics, and data mining. Your research group is expected to make fundamental contributions in the data science area, with an additional focus on societal applications. Societal domains of specific interest to  the department include health/biomedicine, sustainability, and explainable and ethical systems. Furthermore,  you have to be are able to build bridges connect and cooperate  with current research groups in the Department of Computer Science and the broader academic community in Amsterdam such as Amsterdam Data Science and the Innovation Center for Artificial Intelligence. You also are able to develop and compile a coherent teaching program on quantitative data analytics, which will be embedded in the existing educational curricula of the Department.

Your duties
  • you are able to set up and lead a new research group in quantitative data analytics
  • you are able to develop a scientific research program supported by external funding
  • you have a clear and appealing vision of teaching and educational development, focused on the renewal of the faculty's curriculum and on making the best of the educational achievement rate.
  • you have to develop and compile a teaching program that can be embedded in the current teaching programmes of the Department of Computer Science (including Business Analytics, a joint program with the Department of Mathematics) and contribute to new initiatives for post-graduate education.
  • you have experience in supervising  Bachelor, Master, and Ph.D. students
  • you contribute to management duties in the department

Requirements

  • a strong research profile (including a Ph.D. degree) in a relevant area
  • evidence of prominent and internationally recognized research results
  • a comprehensive publication record in top international journals and proceedings of major international conferences
  • Memberships of editorial boards of (prominent) scientific journals or programme committees of reputable conferences. 
  • proven experience with obtaining external research funding
  • either in possession of, or willing to obtain, a teaching qualification (‘BKO’)
  • very good/Excellent  teaching skills, witnessed by good teaching evaluations
  • experience with supervising Bachelor, Master, and Ph.D. students
  • you have a broad (inter)national network and you are recognized as a key expert in the field

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 1 year.

A challenging position in a socially involved organization. On full-time basis the remuneration amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of €5,582 (H2)
and a maximum €9,812 (H1), depending on your education and experience. The job profile: is based on the university job ranking system and is vacant for at least 1 FTE.

The initial employment contract will affect a period of 1 year, with the possibility of extension.

About the department, institute, project
The VUA Department of Computer Science has approximately 170 members, including 35 tenured staff members and 40-50 PhD students. The tenured staff members form the essential basis for the functioning of the department. A tenured staff member is required to make significant contributions to the research and education programmes, and to spend effort on specific tasks at the department level.
