Job description

The goal of this project is to create experimental spin model systems to test machine-learning concepts routed in magnetism, such as glassy or multi-well systems, and probe their dynamics. As a PhD Candidate you will perform experiments utilising ultra-high precision scanning tunnelling microscopy in magnetic fields and at ultra-low temperatures.
You will explore atomic-scale spin systems in order to gain a better understanding of the magnetic properties of complex spin networks, as well as their magnetisation dynamics. You will get to use one of the world’s most advanced compilations of microscopes in a very collaborative environment.

Requirements

  • An experimental background in UHV, cryogenics, and/or scanning probe microscopy, is highly preferred.
  • A willingness to learn: (1) atomic-scale manipulation, (2) probing spin dynamics with STM, (3) ultra-high resolution scanning tunnelling microscopy at mK temperatures.
  • Proficiency in English.
  • Master’s degree in physics or equivalent subject.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: You will be appointed for an initial period of 18 months, after which your performance will be evaluated. If the evaluation is positive, the contract will be extended by 2.5 years.

  • Employment: 40 hours per week.
  • The gross starting salary amounts to €2,325 per month, and will increase to €2,972 in the fourth year (P scale).
  • In addition to the salary: an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
  • Duration of the contract: you will be appointed for an initial period of 18 months, after which your performance will be evaluated. If the evaluation is positive, the contract will be extended by 2.5 years.
  • You will be able to make use of our Dual Career Service: our Dual Career Officer will assist with family-related support, such as child care, and help your partner prepare for the local labour market and with finding an occupation.

The Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM) department at Radboud University’s Institute for Molecules and Materials (IMM) is an interdisciplinary research department currently comprising 15 scientists and students who utilise SPM techniques to study quantum phenomena on the atomic scale in various scientific areas ranging from fundamental physics to chemistry. We approach our scientific goals using and developing cutting-edge SPM instrumentation that operates in ultra-high vacuum, at cryogenic temperatures, with ultra-low mechanical and electronic noise levels, as well as in magnetic fields up to 9T. You will work at the SPM department in close collaboration with the scientific and technical staff members, who will provide you with training on SPM-related knowledge. You will be embedded in our team of scientists and students from around the world in a highly inspiring, innovative and creative work environment.
