A Nairobi-based young expert in food system resilience in areas of protracted crises, who can contribute to the Food and Nutrition Security-Resilience PROgramme (FNS-REPRO) implemented by FAO and Wageningen UR in the Horn of Africa. This programme aims to contribute to resilient livelihoods and food systems, and contributions to sustainable localized peace, in selected regions of Sudan, Somaliland and South Sudan. FNS-REPRO will start in summer 2019 for 4 years.

The selected candidate is a development practitioner who has a good understanding of agriculture-based livelihoods in areas of protracted conflict, is experienced in adult learning methodologies, and has a specific interest in working in countries like Sudan, Somaliland and South Sudan. The candidate will support the management and implementation of the Learning Agenda of FNS-REPRO, which is implemented under responsibility of Wageningen Centre for Development Innovation (WCDI). This learning agenda aims to reinforce field activities and facilitate improved policy and practice on food system resilience. Assignments can range from project monitoring and -reporting, to action-oriented research, capacity strengthening (including facilitating short term training), documentation of good practices, or a combination of the above. Examples of activities include support to food system analyses; moderation of communities of practice; deliver training and contribute to technical assistance to partners; organisation of exchange events, learning journeys, and strategic consultations; liaise with local partners and FAO.

Next to implementing activities, the candidate will contribute to further developing the Centre's international profile and portfolio of work in the area of food system resilience in areas of protracted crises. From the candidate's base at FAO Nairobi's office, he or she will undertake regular assignments in Sudan, Somaliland and South Sudan.

The Young Expert:

• has an MSc/BSc degree in agricultural science, rural development, disaster studies or related field of study;
• has a minimum of two years' relevant working/practical experience (in LMIC is pre);
• is able to capture, analyse, synthesize and present data;
• has experience with organizing learning and exchange events, and is familiar with adult learning methodologies and facilitation tools;
• has a hands-on and flexible attitude;
• thinks 'out of the box' and has a proven proactive approach;
• can deliver under conditions of high work pressure and is able to meet tight deadline;
• has a strong interest in linking theory and practice;
• works independently and takes responsibility;
• builds teams and the capacity of others;
• has good interpersonal communication skills at various levels;
• is able to apply a culturally sensitive approach;
• is excellent in speaking and writing English;
• is willing to live and work in Nairobi, with frequent travel to FNS-REPRO programme implementation areas in Sudan, Somaliland and South Sudan (embedded in the UN security system).

A two-year contract of 36 hours per week. Scale 8 CAO Foundation Wageningen Research: € 2.521 gross per month (based on fulltime employment), depending on education and experience. In addition we offer a holiday allowance of 8% of the annual salary and an end of year benefit of 3%.
