We are looking for an innovative, dynamic and inspiring scholar to lead the Applied Mathematics Chair Group at Wageningen University & Research (0.8-1 fte).

Successful candidates should have a strong background and training in mathematics and should be eager to apply this knowledge to address critical questions and problems in the field of Life and Environmental Sciences as well as contributing to developing new mathematical tools to tackle these questions.

Furthermore the chair is responsible to translate the research activities into the Wageningen University curriculum in which it strives towards better training in mathematics and quantitative (data) methods. Although the chair is responsible for all mathematics courses there is close collaboration with other chairs in setting up the mathematical curriculum.

Role of the chair holder
As head of the Applied Mathematics Chair Group, you will strengthen and innovate the research and education programme, and effectively and constructively manage the group. You will ensure that the group continues to develop and generate a supportive working environment for both young and established academics. Acquisition of external funding for research and attracting PhD candidates will be key elements of your responsibility. You will be expected to strengthen the profile of the Chair Group in national and international networks, thus enhancing the group's successes in generating impact both within and outside academia.

As a successful candidate you:

• Have a PhD degree with an international track record in mathematics
• Have a vision on future research and education in mathematics in the domain of life sciences
• Have demonstrated unifying management, leadership, and coaching skills
• Are an inspiring teacher, supervisor and mentor for students.

Organisation / Embedding
The chairs Mathematics and Statistics together with the Wageningen Research business unit Biometris, form the cluster Biometris. This consists of about 80 staff members. The activities of Biometris are characterized by the mission slogan "Quantitative methods brought to life", and comprise participation in nearly all quantitative education and research in Wageningen. Biometris has a strong internal cohesion, leading to much cooperation and exchange of knowledge and expertise between the three constituting groups. The strength of this construction is that Biometris covers a whole line of research, from fundamental development of mathematical methods to commercial application of this knowledge. This broad scope has the advantage that the research activities may easily inspire the educational activities, ranging from basic courses in the first years, to post graduate courses for PhD's and staff. The research output and the societal relevance of Biometris are judged as 'excellent' by recent international peer review committees.

Research and PhD training primarily is embedded within the Graduate School Production Ecology and Resource Conservation (PE&RC).
