Erasmus MC

Erasmus MC stands for a healthy population and excellence in healthcare. By conducting groundbreaking work, we aim to push boundaries through leading the way in research, education and healthcare. We have access to the latest equipment and techniques in a state-of-the-art environment.

Erasmus MC Cancer Institute encompasses one of the largest radiation oncology departments in Europe treating over 5500 patients per year. The department has a wide-ranged and internationally renowned research program varying from fundamental and translational radiobiology, to biological image guided, interventional and adaptive radiotherapy and clinical trials. The department has access to 12 state-of-the-art medical linear accelerators, including 2 robotic stereotactic treatment units of which one with an in-room CT scanner on rails. Furthermore, the imaging equipment comprises 1 MRI and 3 CT scanners. All research is focused on improving clinical practice and has led to ground breaking innovation such as fully automated treatment planning, daily treatment plan selection strategies, and a one-stop-shop for palliative patients.

The Department of Radiology & Nuclear Medicine is the largest imaging department in the Netherlands with 11 MRI scanners: one preclinical 7T, three 3T, six 1.5T and one 0.2T. Four of them are mainly focused on research including large epidemiological studies, clinical trials, pulse sequence design and coil development. In 2018 two 3T scanners are renewed and substituted by the newest and most advanced in the market. In 2019 a new PET-MR system will be installed. The department has more than 250 employees and 20 research groups. It is among the world's top in the field and one of the most cited imaging departments around the world. Finally, the radiology department has a specific MR Research group with capability on coils and MR sequence development.

Both departments are strongly involved in the Holland Proton Therapy Center for proton therapy, in which TU Delft, Leiden University MC and Erasmus MC collaborate in providing excellent care and groundbreaking research.
