Job description

We are pleased to invite applications for a position as lecturer/ tutor in academic communication within the team Communication in Science (CIS) at Leiden University Medical Center. CIS provides instruction and training in scientific writing and presentation skills to (bio)medical students at bachelor’s and master’s level in both English and Dutch. We train students to be successful communicators in the competitive publish-or-perish world of science publication. Our teaching programme uses a task-based learning approach and is fully integrated within the content curriculum.

Requirements

As part of the Communication in Science team you will provide instruction in scientific writing and training in presentation skills to students of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at bachelor’s and master’s levels in English. You will work closely together with fellow teachers in developing teaching content, teaching students of all levels and contributing to the organization of the curriculum. You tasks will vary from teaching writing clinics to giving presentation trainings and from tutoring individual students to developing new assignments. 

 In short

  • You (preferably) have experience in teaching academic communication skills
  • You have a background in Academic Communication Skills, English for Academic Purposes, or Rhetoric
  • You are familiar with science communication genres and forms
  • You are able to motivate students and have an excellent level of English
  • You are a team player and are comfortable in a complex, dynamic working environment
  • You have strong interpersonal communication skills, good organizational skills and a sense of humour

 

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 11 months.

You (preferably) have experience in teaching third-level students in academic communication skills and you have affinity with science communication and experience with scientific research genres. You have a background in Academic Communication Skills, English for Academic Purposes, or Rhetoric/Argumentation. You are a team player, you are comfortable in co-teaching situations and can function in a complex, dynamic working environment. A background in theatre is also an advantage. Further, you have strong personal communication skills, good organizational skills and a sense of humor.
