Postdoc position: The Role of Sound in the Design of and Interaction with Systems of Smart Things

Job description

Job description

We are looking for a talented researcher in the field of Human-Computer Interaction with a strong affinity with sound. The aim of this position is to conduct research on the role of sound in interactive Systems of Smart Things, and to develop tools that support designers in prototyping and experimenting with sound. Candidates are expected to have advanced skills in sound design, interaction design and design research, and we expect a relevant publication record and convincing portfolio of work.

Background

Our experience of the world is inherently multimodal; in our day-to-day interactions we seamlessly combine the stimuli we receive into a holistic experience. Sound forms an integral part of this, embodying unique informational qualities when compared to e.g., the visual modality. However, when looking at current interaction design we observe that sound is relatively underexposed—and perhaps even undervalued; most designed interactions mainly address the visual and haptic modalities. Think for example of the plethora of capacitive multi-touch based interactions we have grown accustomed to with the commoditisation of the smart phone and tablet.

As powerful as these platforms may be, we see many opportunities for cutting-edge work designing for the auditory modality, especially in contexts where touch screen interactions are inappropriate or even impossible, or in contexts where it simply makes more sense to make use of the unique qualities of auditory information. Our main interest in this lies in how we will be interacting within the upcoming field of IoT systems or, as we refer to them, Systems of Smart Things (SoST). After all, if 'smartness' can be added to anything in our environment, should we then turn our smart environment in one big lived-in touch screen or consider a more holistic, humanistic interactive experience?

This postdoc position is aimed at exploring the role of sound in the design of and interaction with Systems of Smart Things, and setting up a strong, strategic basis in that field for the Department of Industrial Design. Potential application areas of the research include Health (e.g., in the hospital of professional care environment), the work environment, and in the evolving field of (autonomous) transportation.

Research position

The postdoc will be embedded in the scientific research and network of the Future Everyday (FE) research group of the Department of Industrial Design at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). The FE group pursues groundbreaking research in interactive, intelligent products, systems and services. The research will be executed in close collaboration with academic and industrial stakeholders, and with students in our education programs. The Postdoc will be in charge of (1) supporting the setup of an initial research/design platform/infrastructure; (2) establishing and maintaining existing and new partnerships; and (3) setting up and writing research grants; (4) contributing to strategic publication and documentation. The Postdoc will strengthen the scientific program of the group in this area and publish in relevant communities (such as the relevant ACM conferences). The research is supervised by dr. Bart Hengeveld from the Future Everyday group in the Department of Industrial Design, TU/e.
