The tenure track candidate is expected to work as an assistant professor in the Department of Water and Climate Risk of the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM). Over time, the tenure track candidate will write innovative proposals to acquire external funds, thereby establishing a personal research domain within the field of drought risk modelling. In the first year, the candidate will coordinate two projects on drought risk adaptation in Africa funded by the World Bank. The candidate is expected to develop unique expertise in drought risk modelling, food production and climate change using combinations of hydrological modelling, risk assessment, machine learning, and agent-based models. Research will focus on how climate change and human interventions affect the hydrological cycle creating drought risks and impacts for agriculture, but also how human interventions from local to global scales impact the hydrological cycle.
Besides research, the candidate will be responsible for teaching at Bachelor and Master levels within the field of water management and climate adaptation. In principle, teaching and research are strongly linked, allowing for mutual cross-fertilization. While collaborating closely with colleagues within the field of water and climate risk department, the candidate is also expected to engage in interdisciplinary research working together with other scientific disciplines, such as economics, geography, ecology, hydrology and climatology. The candidate should have excellent programming skills, and have experience with processing large amounts of data from climate or impact models. The candidate should show academic leadership, maintain a high publication output, and raise competitive research funding. On the longer term, the candidate is expected to build up a successful group around his/her field of expertise. The candidate will co-supervise two PhDs, and several MSc students.
