Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) has a vacancy in the Multiscale Dynamics research group for a talented Postdoc, on the subject of Machine Learning in Space Physics.

Job description

The Multiscale Dynamics group at CWI is looking for a postdoc to work on machine learning for space physics. The 24 month postdoc position is part of the ESCAPE H2020 Project funded by the European Commission.

Multiple space missions as well as ground-based telescopes have recorded a vast amount of data (images, spectra, time series) on processes taking place in the solar corona, solar wind and Earth’s magnetosphere. However, most of this data is unlabeled. For the present position, the main aim is therefore to use unsupervised machine learning methods to learn more about the sun and the solar wind. There is quite some flexibility. You could for example work on unsupervised techniques such as clustering and anomaly detection for the solar wind, or to explore temporal correlations (and the mutual information) between different data sources. Another interesting project could be to set up machine learning benchmark(s) for forecasting solar indices.

The ESCAPE project is a large (16 M€) collaboration that aims to link next-generation research facilities (ESFRIs) with the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). Within ESCAPE, we will in particular collaborate with Dario Del Moro from University of Rome Tor Vergata. At CWI, you will interact with the Machine Learning for Space Weather team, which is pioneering several Artificial Intelligence approaches for Space Weather applications.
