We are looking for a talented individual to join the Community of Data Driven Insights (CDDI) at Maastricht University. The successful applicant will contribute to a new university initiative to make most research data FAIR – Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable by 2025.

The Data Scientist will partner with researchers to create reproducible data-driven scientific workflows using internally generated research data, and optionally in combination with external data.

Job description

  • Implement lightweight ETL processes to wrangle data into more useful forms;
  • Develop effective solutions for data mining, machine learning and visualization;
  • Have the capacity to thrive in our fast-paced environment and take ownership of your work;
  • Challenge ideas and methods while working together with talented, highly skilled team members;
  • Advise researchers in the preparation and execution of their data analysis plans;
  • Collaborate with colleagues from Maastricht University and Maastricht University Medical Center.

Requirements

  • A MSc degree in science, engineering, mathematics or fields with a solid foundation in statistics or analytics;
  • Proficiency of the English language;
  • Expertise in using Python and/or R for data analysis;
  • Experience with machine learning, deep learning and data mining algorithms;
  • Have developed creative approaches to analysis and data exploration;
  • Understanding of Big Data technologies (Hadoop, Spark);
  • Expertise in multi-omics data analysis; including vocabulary mapping and MRI/CT image feature extraction;
  • Broad interest in scientific research and in the research process;
  • Willing to acquire new skills and come up with new approaches;
  • Proven experience in collaborative multidisciplinary teams;
  • Experience with working with databases (SQL, NoSQL, SPARQL, BigData);
  • Have used tools to process large scale, sparse datasets is a plus (e.g. Spark, Hadoop);
  • GPU computing;
  • Contributed to open source projects;
  • Experience with other languages (e.g. Java, Scala, Angular2).

Preferred qualifications:

  • Good command of the Dutch Language.

  • The salary is competitive, depending on qualifications and work experience between scale 9.0- end of scale 10 € 2.709,- and a maximum of € 4.274,-  per month, based on a full-time appointment (38 hours/week). On top of this, there is an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end of the year allowance;
  • We offer an attractive package of fringe benefits such as, reduction on collective health insurance, substantial leave arrangements, parental leave packages, attractive retirement benefits and application for attractive fiscal arrangements for employees from abroad;
  • 38 hours per week (less is possibility with a minimum of 30,4 hours a week);
