Job description

The Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) seeks to expand its academic staff by appointment of an assistant professor with a specialization in international security, conflict studies and qualitative research methods. The applicant must have demonstrated experience in teaching qualitative research methods (e.g., research design, comparative case studies, interview techniques and process tracing). Research areas of interest are international security, international organization, conflict studies, international political economy and international relations theory, migration and the environment. The candidate will be expected to teach across the various programmes of the institute, at Bachelor’s and Master’s level, including the Advanced MSc in International Relations and Diplomacy and the MSc in Crisis and Security Management. The successful applicant will be expected to:

  • Teach qualitative methods courses (qualitative research design & analysis and research design);
  • Teach in at least one of the following areas: international security, international political economy, conflict studies, non-traditional security threats (migration and the environment);
  • Participate in and contribute to the research conducted within ISGA and the faculty of governance and global affairs;
  • Conduct independent research and support the ongoing development and implementation of the research strategy of ISGA;
  • Have excellent command and teaching experience in English-taught courses;
  • Take on administration tasks (such as participating in committees related to the institute and its programs);
  • Supervise theses and capstone projects;
  • Have been successful in grant acquisition or show promise to develop high-quality research grant applications.

Requirements

  • PhD degree in political science, international relations, conflict or security studies or a closely related academic area;
  • Outstanding research qualities manifested in an established or developing publication record that includes publications in international peer-reviewed journals;
  • Demonstrable excellence in research-led teaching;
  • Excellent network in the area of international relations and international organization, security studies or global affairs;
  • Demonstrable commitment to the public and political debate related to core issues of security and global affairs;

Conditions of employment

We offer a full time position initially for one year, with the possibility of renewal and the intention to turn the position into a permanent one, based on need, funding and performance. Salary range from €3,637.- to €4,978.-  gross per month (pay scale 11, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities).
