Job description

Structural design is the science and art of devising buildings, bridges and other structures that are safe, sustainable and elegant. This is an indispensable skill for current and future generations who must cater for the projected growth in urban population and deal with ageing buildings and infrastructure.  In the past 10 years the AE+T department has positioned itself at the interface of architecture and engineering that underpins excellent structural design. It has a world-leading academic reputation, a high impact in real-world applications and an excellent reputation with national and international employers in architectural engineering. The AE+T department is therefore uniquely placed to grasp the exciting opportunities in this field such as advanced materials, novel methods of construction; powerful computational design tools; the internet of things etc. All of which are rooted in a deep understanding of fundamental principles, strong conceptual design skills and excellent teaching that are a trademark of TU Delft.

The newly formed Chair of Structural Design & Mechanics provides an excellent environment for a tenure-track position. The group is led by Prof. Mauro Overend and consists of a vibrant group of outstanding teachers and researchers who collaborate closely with the other Chairs at AE+T and particularly with the Chair of Architectural Glass lead by Prof. James O’Callaghan.

The setting of these two chairs provides an excellent opportunity for the tenure-track holder to establish the Structural Design theme in the Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences BSc program and the Building Technology MSc program of the Department AE+T.

The tenure track position will focus on structural design and will strengthen the relationship between design and engineering at BSc and MSc levels and pursue original research and excellent teaching in structural design that bridges between themes within the faculty and with other faculties at TU Delft.

Department

Faculty Architecture & the Built Environment

The faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment has a leading role in education and research worldwide. The driving force behind the faculty’s success is its robust research profile combined with the passion and creativity of its student body and academic community. It is a place that is buzzing with life from early in the morning until late at night, with four thousand people studying, working, designing, conducting research and acquiring and disseminating knowledge. Academics and students have been working on improving the built environment with the help of a broad set of disciplines, including architectural design, urban planning, building technology, social sciences, process management, and geo-information science. The faculty works closely with other faculties, universities, private parties, and the public sector, and has an extensive network in the Netherlands as well as internationally.

The department of Architectural Engineering + Technology is positioned between ‘traditional’ civil engineering and architectural design disciplines. Architectural Engineering and Technology connects both extremes, but more than this, it forms the new core of design for the built environment of the future, with sensitivity for aesthetics, health, heritage, sustainability, biodiversity and other values, and with sufficient technical knowledge to enable innovation in numerous fields.

The Structural Design & Mechanics Group is a multi-disciplinary teaching and research group with expertise in structural mechanics, structural materials and structural design.

The group explores useful mechanical characteristics, engineer novel structural components and develop associated design methods to produce structures that are sustainable, safe and elegant.

The group has strong links with other teachers and researchers at Architecture, Civil Engineering and Materials Science at TU Delft. The group collaborates closely with other academics globally and with like-minded industrial partners ranging from local SMEs to multi-national PLCs.
