The assistant professorship Urban Design on the Regional Scale (tenure track) helps the Department of Urbanism to sustain and develop the faculty’s tradition in regional design. The faculty’s design practice is associated with both innovation in and operationalization of national planning in the Dutch tradition. 

The tenure track assistant professorship Urban Design on the Regional Scale will focus on regional design methods and principles for the sustainable development of city regions and their effects on city design. The position holder should get involved in strategic projects for regional development and assess the performance of regional design tools and instruments in various institutional settings. 

The successful candidate will contribute to the teaching program of the faculty, supervise students on all levels of university education, and acquire University Teaching Qualifications (UTQ) within an agreed period. The candidate will actively acquire funding from both national and European research agencies and carry out collaborative projects. Applicants must have:

• a PhD in Urban Design or a related discipline;
• experience in digital methods of urban analysis;
• experience in teaching on MSc and BSc levels within the field of Urban Design;
• experience in supervising students and PhD students and the ability to motivate students;
• a track record as researcher within the discipline of Urban Design;
• experience in the management of research projects and grant proposal writing;
• a demonstrated proficiency in the written and spoken use of the English language as well as the willingness to learn Dutch;
• good presentation and communication skills.

Fixed-term contract: Tenure Track.

A tenure-track position is offered for six years. Based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment, a decision will be made by the fifth year whether to offer you a permanent faculty position. For circumstances as having children or parental leave during the tenure track, it is possible to delay the definitive assessment and extend the Tenure Track appointment to a maximum of 8 years.

Urban Design has a long tradition within the department, with Cornelis van Eesteren being one of its most important founding fathers. It follows a multidisciplinary approach in research and design and uses its knowledge and skills towards the design of more sustainable living environments. Here a specific focus is given to the challenges of urbanisation in the context of larger transformative processes as climate change, demography and technological change. A specific focus is set on the contribution of Urban Design to the subject of urban transformation and environmental change, liveability and the design of public space. Morphological and typological research plays an important role in Urban Design, combined with research on social use and identity. Owing to the emphasis on urban form, environmental qualities and theory and methods, there is close cooperation with other design disciplines, e.g. architecture, landscape architecture, civil-engineering and cultural studies.
