The Department of Quantitative Economics (QE) of the School of Business and Economics (SBE) is looking for an Assistant Professor (on a tenure track position) in economic theory, with special interest in one or more of the following areas: mathematical economics, mechanism design, game theory, or social choice theory.

The teaching tasks of the QE Department consist of both courses for the bachelor and master programs in Economics and Business, and courses for the Bachelor and Master programs in Econometrics and Operations Research (E&OR). Teaching tasks range from teaching in small groups (UM’s Problem Based Learning) to lecturing and course coordination, as well as supervision of bachelor and master theses. As to the E&OR programs, teaching within QE covers the large spectrum of mathematics, statistics, operations research, econometrics, mathematical economics, data science, and actuarial science. Research of the members of the QE Department also covers topics in all these areas.

The applicant will contribute to education by teaching in mathematics, economic theory and mathematical economics. The applicant will contribute to research by publishing in international top journals in one or more of the fields of interest to the QE department. The applicant is also expected to apply for research grants.

Profile of the candidate:

* has a PhD (or is close to completion) in Mathematics, Economic Theory, or a related field;

* has a  strong research orientation;

* has experience with education in mathematics, game theory, and related topics;

* is an enthusiastic and cooperative colleague, who is willing to collaborate with the colleagues in the mathematical economics group, and the QE department as a whole, in research and teaching;

* has excellent command of English (oral and writing), in particular since all teaching is in English;

* preferably has experience with teaching international classrooms.

Conditions of employment

Initially, candidates are employed on a temporary contract as assistant professor (level 2) and agree to specific development goals. Five years into the appointment, candidates will be evaluated and if the development goals have been met, promoted to assistant professor (level 1) on a permanent contract. The evaluation can be brought forward if criteria are met earlier. On the candidate’s request the evaluation can be deferred in case of special personal circumstances, such as pregnancy leave, parental leave or chronic illness.

Gross monthly salary is between € 3.637 and € 5.656 (starting salary scale is 11 UD2). On top of this, there is an 8% holiday allowance and an 8,3% year-end bonus.
