Job description

The research group Integral Design & Management has a vacancy for 1,0 fte for an asistant professor Transdisciplinary Design of Infrastructures in the Environment.
Civil infrastructures are interlinked with the environment and their design can purposely contribute to sustainable development that addresses issues such as climate resilience, economic prosperity and societal wellbeing. The tenure track focuses on upcoming transitions such as climate change, energy transition, circular economy and ongoing urbanisation and tries to reduce knowledge fragmentation by means of collaborative design with key players in order to come to joint solutions. Goals include the development of an effective design approach that translates societal challenges in interdisciplinary design for infrastructures, and contribution to designs, for instance for upcoming replacement of locks and flood defences, railway stations and (air)ports. Close collaboration with industry, policy-makers, and other societal partners is key. The ultimate goal of the tenure is to approach these transitions by means of transdisciplinary design and to contribute to practice via a combination of problem-seeking and problem-solving methods. The tenure track includes teaching, acquiring both second and third-source funding for research, and publishing in peer-reviewed journals. The tenure track with its own focus broadens the scope of the section Integral Design and Management.

Department

Faculty Civil Engineering and Geosciences

The position is located within the department of Materials, Mechanics, Management & Design (3MD). 3MD focusses on the design, construction and management of civil infrastructures and buildings. A multi-scale research approach is followed, starting at micro-scale (materials), to meso-scale (structures) and to macro-scale (infrastructures/systems). The department governs the entire life cycle of materials/structures/systems from design, management, maintenance to demolition or reuse. The department has strong competences in modelling and design for both civil infrastructures as well as buildings. Integral Design and Management (IDM) is one the three groups within the department.
The viewpoint of IDM is that a comprehensive view of the life cycle of structures, corridors and networks should generate maximum value (social, economic) for all stakeholders concerned. The group has four sub-groups: integral design, project management, construction technology, and engineering asset management. Aspects we pay special attention to are stakeholder alignment, transdisciplinary collaboration, information systems, building information modelling, contracting and procurement, economics and finance. IDM hosts the master Construction Management and Engineering and the two minors Project Management from Nano to Mega, and Integrated Infrastructure Design. IDM carries out research for NWO, TTW, EU, and with industry partners. IDM has 10 people staff and over 15 PhD's.
The faculty of Civil Engineering & Geosciences (CEG) is committed to outstanding international research and education in the field of civil engineering, applied earth sciences, traffic and transport, water technology and delta technology. The research covers global social issues and is closely connected to education as well as the work of a wide range of knowledge institutions. CEG is convinced that Open Science helps to realise these goals and supports its scientists in integrating Open Science in their research practice. The Faculty of CEG comprises 28 research groups in the following seven departments: Materials Mechanics Management & Design, Engineering Structures, Geoscience and Engineering, Geoscience and Remote Sensing, Transport & Planning, Hydraulic Engineering and Water Management.
