Job description

The High Energy Physics Department of the Institute for Mathematics, Astrophysics and Particle Physics (IMAPP, Faculty of Science, Radboud University) is looking for a tenure-track assistant professor with experience in cosmic ray physics or related subjects and an interest in radio detection of cosmic rays. Initially, you will be expected to contribute to the work carried out upgraded Pierre Auger Observatory in the area of commissioning, data reconstruction and data analysis. You will also have the opportunity to participate in designing and prototype testing for the GRAND observatory. In addition, you will be encouraged to develop your own research line in the context of the research conducted at the upgraded Auger Observatory and GRAND. You will be expected to supervise a number of PhD candidates and to teach courses on all levels of the Bachelor’s and Master's programmes in Physics. You will actively contribute to the supervision of Bachelor’s and Master’s projects and will be involved in organisational tasks within IMAPP.

Requirements

  • A PhD in particle physics and a number of years of postdoctoral experience.
  • An active interest in astroparticle physics instrumentation, preferably but not necessarily in radio detection of cosmic rays, demonstrated by publications in scientific journals and presentations at conferences.
  • Excellent knowledge of astroparticle physics and a broad overview of the field; you are able to set up your own research programme and attract external project funding.
  • Good teaching skills, preferably experience with teaching or student supervision and a commitment to teaching at graduate and undergraduate level.
  • You are able to work effectively in a team of researchers.
If you are not fluent in Dutch, you will be allowed to teach in English, but you should be willing to acquire the skills necessary to lecture in Dutch.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 6 years.

  • Employment: 32 - 40 hours per week.
  • A maximum gross monthly salary of € 4.978 based on a 38-hour working week (salary scale 11).
  • At the start of your tenure track you will be employed as an Assistant Professor level 2 (salary scale 11) for a six year period. Following a positive evaluation based on the criteria you will be appointed as an Assistant Professor level 1 (salary scale 12) on the basis of a permanent contract.   • In addition to the salary: an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus.

The Faculty of Science (FNWI) of Radboud University is responsible for research and teaching in mathematics, physics, astronomy, chemistry, biology, and computer science. FNWI encompasses six research institutes, one of them being the Institute for Mathematics, Astrophysics and Particle Physics (IMAPP). IMAPP’s main research areas are mathematics, astrophysics and high-energy physics, focusing on disciplinary as well as interdisciplinary approaches, and having close links to other research areas and institutes at the faculty and university.

The high-energy physics group is conducting experimental programmes at the Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina (jointly with the astronomy department), participating in the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, and will also participate in research at the future GRAND observatory. We also offer theory programmes in phenomenology and quantum gravity. It is one of the founding partners of Nikhef, the national institute for subatomic physics, which coordinates the particle and astroparticle physics activities in the Netherlands.
