The successful candidate will join the newly established Urban Studies group at the department of Urbanism. The group investigates people-place interactions and the causes and consequences of spatial inequalities at different spatial scales, in an interdisciplinary and international setting. This new post is an exciting opportunity to co-develop and contribute to the new teaching and research program in Urban Studies aimed at better understanding inequalities and what to do about them. The candidate is expected to set up an independent research line within the research programme of Urban Studies and to establish links with urban design and urban and regional planning. The candidate is also expected to supervise PhD students, and publish research in high-impact peer reviewed journals. The successful candidate will actively acquire funding (from national and European Research Councils, Horizon 2020, or comparable) for research projects and lead and carry out collaborative projects with colleagues. The candidate will contribute to the teaching programme of the faculty, develop own teaching material and courses, supervise students on all levels of university education, and acquire University Teaching Qualifications within an agreed period. The successful candidate for this position has:

• A strong interest in better understanding people-place interactions and spatial inequalities through the use of scientific research, and an ability to design creative solutions to combat the negative effects of inequality.
• A PhD in the social or spatial sciences, for example geography, (urban)sociology, spatial planning, environmental psychology, criminology, applied statistics or other relevant spatially aware disciplines.
• Postdoctoral research experience.
• A strong international profile, evidenced by international work experience and network.
• A track record as researcher within the theme of Urban Studies, evidenced by a strong list of internationally peer-reviewed publications and contributions to books.
• Preferably experience in the management of research projects, grant proposal writing, and supervision of PhD students.
• Preferably experience with analysing large longitudinal (big)datasets using advanced statistical techniques.
• Experience with teaching within the theme of Urban Studies (preferably with a connection to urban design and urban and regional planning) and the ambition to acquire University Teaching Qualifications within a short period of time.
• Experience in supervising students and the ability to motivate students.
• A demonstrated proficiency in the written and spoken use of the English language as well as the willingness to learn Dutch, and good presentation and communication skills.

Fixed-term contract: Tenure Track position.

A tenure-track position is offered for six years. Faculty Architecture & the Built Environment

Since its foundation 110 years ago, the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment has built up a solid international reputation for training architects, urban planners and designers, as well as for its research portfolio and coaching of PhD candidates. Traditionally, the faculty has prioritised high-quality training in design and research in the field of the built environment. Over 40 chairs cover a wide range of academic areas in design, process and technology, which together cover the entire field of the built environment.

The Department of Urbanism in the Faculty of Architecture at Delft University of Technology was established in 1948 and since then has contributed to academic knowledge of the urban environment and design and planning interventions. The Urbanism research group’s core task is to mobilise its multidisciplinary knowledge, skills and reputation towards the creation of more sustainable living environments. The priority is to contribute solutions to the urgent challenges of urbanisation in the context of climate change.

The Section Urban Studies is a newly established group starting from 2019. The group will grow to 6 permanent staff, and currently comprises of 4 permanent staff, 2 post-docs, and 10 PhD students. The Urban Studies group investigates people-place relationships at different spatial scales, from neighbourhoods to cities to regions. Through our research we aim to better understand how neighbourhoods, cities and regions develop, and how different spatial configurations and structures emerge (within and between cities), and how these configurations affect people across the life course. The multi-level interaction between people and places is central in our research. We investigate how the urban context affects individuals, and we investigate how people influence the socio-spatial structures around them. The research in Urban Studies is multi-disciplinary and empirical in nature, using both qualitative and quantitative research methods, with a strong emphasis on the use of very large longitudinal register data sets and advanced statistical techniques.
