Nikhef, the national institute for subatomic physics in The Netherlands, is looking for a

PhD student in experimental particle physics (ALICE)

 
The Nikhef organisation
Nikhef is the national institute for subatomic physics in The Netherlands. At Nikhef, approximately 175 physicists and 75 technical staff members work together in an open and international scientific environment. Together, they perform theoretical and experimental research in the fields of particle and astroparticle physics. The Nikhef institute is a collaboration between six major Dutch universities and the Dutch Foundation for Scientific Research (NWO).

Nikhef participates in large research collaborations, including the ATLAS, LHCb and ALICE experiments at CERN, the KM3NeT neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean, the VIRGO interferometer in Pisa, the Xenon1T dark matter experiment in Gran Sasso, the Pierre Auger cosmic ray observatory in Argentina and the eEDM research programme in Groningen. Nikhef also hosts a group in theoretical physics, and groups for Physics Data Processing and detector R&D, all with good connections to the experimental programs.

The position In the ALICE program, we use high-energy collisions of heavy lead ions to create and study the high-temperature state of the strong interaction: the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP). We are looking for one or more PhD students for research projects using so-called hard probes, in which we use quarks and gluons with high momentum which are produced in the collision to probe the QGP. In these projects, we combine analysis of the experimental data with model studies to interpret and understand the result. The candidates should have a strong interest in fundamental (particle) physics and an affinity with large scale data analysis, including statistical techniques and programming of analysis algorithms. Prior experience in some of these areas is an advantage. The successful candidate will be a member of the ALICE group at Nikhef and the Institute for Subatomic Physics at Utrecht University.

Requirements We are looking for a candidate with a (almost) completed master degree in physics, in a relevant field. The ideal candidate has a strong interest in data analysis and has some research experience in particle physics.
