Erasmus School of Social and Behavioural Sciences has launched a strategy for the period 2019-2022. Part of the strategy is to create/strengthen four multidisciplinary pillars by specifically investing in research and education in these fields. The pillars are:

Within the pillar of Global Social Challenges, the Department of Public Administration and Sociology (DPAS) has started a new Master specialization in Social Inequalities. The current position is created as part of our strategy and is strongly related to the new Master specialization.

To this end, DPAS is seeking candidates for the position of:

Assistant Professor Sociology, in particular ‘Social Inequalities’ (1.0 FTE)

Objective of the job:

The principle responsibilities of the Assistant Professor will be to contribute to our educational program within the Department of Public Administration and Sociology, to contribute to our research program (with a particular focus on Social Inequalities), and to contribute to the faculty’s strategy, specifically by further developing  the Master specialization Social Inequalities.

Job description:
We are looking for a scholar in the field of sociology with a demonstrated interest in theoretical and methodological perspectives to understanding the antecedents and consequences of social inequality. Your research will contribute to social scientific debates around how microlevel (family environment), mesolevel (organisational culture and practices) and macrolevel (educational systems, welfare regimes) mitigate, sustain or strengthen social inequalities.

You will contribute to an internationally oriented teaching programme at Erasmus University Rotterdam. You will be expected to adapt and coordinate existing courses that are used for the newly developed Sociology master specialization Social Inequalities (which started in September 2019). Over the long term, opportunities will emerge to contribute to the design and policy of our Master and Bachelor programme.

Activities

The candidate:

• performs teaching tasks in the DPAS educational programmes such as coordinating/teaching modules and supervising theses. Including, but not necessarily limited to, modules and theses of the English taught Master specialization Social Inequalities;
• conducts research within the Department of Public Administration and Sociology;
• contributes to the faculty’s strategy, principally by contributing to the Master specialization Social Inequalities, but perhaps also by working on other strategic goals, such as those regarding lifelong learning;   
• The candidate preferably adds expertise on the antecedents and consequences of social inequalities, and shows interest in/adds knowledge to the wider domain of Sociology and Public Administration.

We are looking for a highly motivated scholar:

General:

• With a completed PhD thesis in sociology, or another relevant social science;
• With a keen interest in cross-disciplinary teaching, research and collaboration;
• Who is fluent in written and spoken English (at a minimum level of C1, according to the Common European Framework – and preferably C2), both oral and written;
• With excellent communicative skills, proactive and independent work attitude;
• With a great curiosity and enthusiasm for scientific research.

Teaching:

• Who has an excellent teaching record and proven teaching skills;
• Who has basic competencies in course and curriculum development;
• Who preferably has a vision on/experience with international content, international learning outcomes and/or intercultural skills;
• Who has demonstrated ability to inspire and supervise BSc, MSc and PhD students;
• Who has demonstrated experience and affinity with delivering high quality education at both BSc and MSc levels;
• Who has a teaching certificate (BKO), or is willing to obtain this;

Research:

• Who has good knowledge of sociology in general and in-depth knowledge of stratification sociology/the literature on social inequality, as proven by previous academic activities and publications in international journals;
• Who has a good publishing record in peer reviewed international academic literature;
• Who has demonstrated interest or ability to work in an interdisciplinary research environment;

Internationally-oriented and varied work within an enthusiastic team, with attractive fringe benefits in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU). Your employment term will be for 3,5 years (temporary contract for 3,5 years), the trial period is two months. Employment starts preferably no later than June 1st 2020.

Salary is subject to know-how and experience and corresponds to scale 11 CAO NU, which is between € 3.637 and € 4.978 gross per month on a full-time basis (38 hour per week; 1.0 fte).
