We are delighted to welcome an enthusiastic Assistant or Associate Professor who is willing to take the lead in research and education on Hydraulic Structures.
Given the challenges of ageing infrastructure, climate change and increasing demands, it is essential to gain more knowledge of the performance and design of hydraulic structures, such as dikes, sluices, barriers, dams, floating structures etc. Challenges include a more robust characterization of structural performance and reliability of these structures and the development of guidance for design and engineering. Your research and education will focus hydraulic structures, particularly on structural aspects. The candidate has experience and interest in one or more of the following approaches: structural reliability, response to extreme hydraulic loads, fluid structure interaction through modelling and /or experiments or related fields. Examples of application areas include: gates, barriers, dams, quay walls, floating structures etc. A background and track record in one or more of these fields would be particularly welcome.
Responsibilities of the tenure track position include publication of peer-reviewed journal papers and acquisition of research funding. The candidate is able to acquire funding for these projects through cooperation with the private sector, government and/or EU or Dutch national projects and research grants. A good network in academia, the private sector, government and research institutes is relevant. The research will result in publications in journals and/or applications in the practice of hydraulic engineering, e.g. in the form of criteria and methods for design.
Another important responsibility is the development and teaching of one or more BSc/MSc courses and (co-)supervision of BSc/MSc students, project teams, design projects and PhD candidates. In the education programme, new developments in the hydraulic engineering field should be continuously implemented.
The distribution between research and education is approximately 50:50. A small portion of the position’s responsibilities is devoted to management activities such as participation in department and faculty committees.
At the level of Assistant Professor, we welcome open-minded, creative candidates willing to explore new avenues of research in this field.
At the level of Associate Professor, the candidate is expected to have proven capabilities with the initiation and coordination of the research and education described above.
We seek a colleague who has the dedication to pursue a career in academia. You hold a PhD degree in Civil Engineering or a related field. You have relevant experience in and good knowledge of disciplines such as hydraulic and structural engineering and related specializations and can act as an integrator of various disciplines in research, education and projects. You have demonstrated experience or at least affinity with the analysis, research and/or design of hydraulic structures.
You have experience in academic teaching and/or delivery and development of course programmes for engineering professionals.
You can deliver high-quality research, as evidenced by your publication record. We acknowledge your ambition to set up your own research area and build up your own research group, while maintaining close links with other research areas.

Fixed-term contract: tenure track (6 years with the prospect of a permanent contract).
At the start of the tenure track, you will be appointed as Assistant or Associate Professor for the duration of six years. You will receive a start-up package to facilitate a head-start of your research. If your performance and (soft) skills are evaluated positively at the end of the tenure track, you will be appointed in a permanent Assistant or Associate Professor position.

The position is located within the Department of Hydraulic Engineering at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences. Our research and education agenda is driven by societal needs to design, engineer, and manage human interventions in the natural environment, for purposes such as flood safety, navigation, nature development, and recreation. To that end, the department aims at thorough understanding of the behaviour of rivers, coasts, estuaries, and seas, as well as interventions in these systems. The department consists of five groups: Coastal Engineering; Rivers, Ports, Waterways and Dredging Engineering; Environmental Fluid Mechanics, Hydraulic Structures and Flood Risk, and Offshore Engineering. Building on close working relationships with Deltares, Rijkswaterstaat, industry and other Dutch research organisations, joining our group also means you become embedded in an entire country with a long history of coastal know-how.
The Assistant or Associate Professor will be working in the hydraulic structures and flood risk group. The group focuses on research and education related to hydraulic engineering systems and structures, probabilistic design and flood risk management. The group aims to do top-level research and provides excellent academic education for future generations of (hydraulic) engineers. Research and education are based on the traditionally strong Dutch skills in flood protection (e.g. Delta works) and recently developed approaches in the field of reliability- and risk-based design of hydraulic infrastructure.
