Job description

The appointee will be embedded in the Department of Organization Studies (http://tinyurl.com/kq54h9p) at the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences of Tilburg University. Research in the department (https://tinyurl.com/rnwqdnu) focuses on relations within and between organizations and their effects on organizations’ adaptive behavior (e.g., organizational learning, change, innovation, etc.). The department has a very strong research orientation with a focus on high-quality publications in leading journals. Our faculty publish in e.g. Academy of Management Annals, Strategic Management Journal, Academy of Management Journal, Organization Science, Organization Studies, Research Policy, International Journal of Project Management, and Journal of Management. Members of the department supervise Bachelor and Master students and teach a variety of degree courses at both levels in the Organization Studies programs including the Bachelor track ‘Global Management of Social Issues’ and the Master specialization tracks ‘Global Management of Social Issues’ (https://tinyurl.com/y2r3u4qd). The last two programs focus on organizing for grand challenges. All programs and tracks (except for one of the bachelor programs) are taught in English. Non-Dutch-speaking candidates will be asked to teach in English only. The working language of the Department and School is English.

Profile of the Associate Professorship Organizing for Social Issues (tenured)

Eligible female candidates for this tenured position should be specialized in education and research of organizing for social issues, also known as grand challenges or wicked problems ( for example climate change, sustainable production and consumption, migration or poverty and inequality). Organizing for social issues requires social innovations and entrepreneurship as well as new organizational forms (e.g., cross-sectoral partnering) that concern the involvement of multiple stakeholders, collaboration in multidisciplinary, international network-based projects that execute tasks over multiple iterations over longer periods. Each of these aspects of organizing for social issues defines important competences we are looking for in the ideal candidate.

The candidate is responsible for high-quality teaching and research in the Tilburg School of Social and Behavioral Sciences in the areas of Global Management of Social Issues, and Organization Studies, by:

  • Elaborating an international and comparative perspective to studying and addressing topics related to organizing for social issues;
  • Bringing and sharing deep expertise on social issues/Grand Challenges, such as sustainability, the circular economy, poverty and inequality or migration from an organization studies or management perspecti
  • Exploring new data analysis approaches. As an emerging new interdisciplinary field, data science provides new tools for analyzing social issues and evaluating interventions that aim at social innovation.

Requirements

Candidates for the position must have the following qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in Organization and/or Management Studies or equivalent degree in a related or relevant field, with an interest in organization theory and sociology;
  • Evidence of sustained research achievements, reflected in peer-reviewed publications, preferably in top-tier outlets;
  • Have a solid background in current methodological/statistical development (quantitative and/or qualitative) and preferably have ample experience in a multidisciplinary environment;
  • A genuine interest in working and performing in a multidisciplinary research environment;
  • Have the ability to obtain and manage research grants/experience or willingness to participate in research funding efforts;
  • Excellence or the potential for excellence, in teaching students, and a strong and demonstrable commitment to the organization and delivery of teaching;
  • Experience in assisting students and Ph.D.’s while being a coach and a role model for all female students, postdocs and assistant professors;Strong command of Dutch or the willingness to learn within 2 years;
  • Strong command of English (C2 level);
  • Preferably evidence of having successfully held a position of academic leadership.

The candidates are expected:

  • To meet the criteria in terms of research quality, teaching quality, management responsibilities, proven valorization of their research and active role as a member of the Department of Organization Studies;
  • To take an active role as a role model or diversity agent in the university (e.g. by delivering a public lecture; by making their research available for a larger audience; by mentoring other junior women faculty; by incorporating gender as an integral part in the teaching and research programs).
