Job description

Within the faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, and Computer Science (EEMCS), the group NanoElectronics (NE), part of the Centre for Brain-Inspired Nano Systems (BRAINS), is looking for a highly motivated Assistant Professor (f/m) in Neuromorphic Computing.

In this position, you will work on novel brain-inspired nanomaterial systems for Neuromorphic Computing that can eventually compete with artificial neural networks implemented in conventional CMOS-based computers with von Neumann architecture. Recent work in the group NE has shown that reconfigurable logic realized in networks of dopants in silicon can have smaller footprint and energy consumption than equivalent CMOS-based logic . The Nanolab of the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology is at your disposal for experimentation, as well as state-of-the-art physical and electrical characterization techniques.

The NanoElectronics Group and the Centre for Brain-Inspired Nano Systems are embedded in the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology (www.mesaplus.utwente.nl). MESA+ is one of the largest nanotechnology research institutes in the world, delivering competitive and successful high-quality research. It uses a unique structure, which unites scientific disciplines, and builds fruitful international cooperation to excel in science and education. The institute employs 500 people of which 275 are PhD’s or PostDocs. With its brand new NanoLab facilities the institute holds 1250 m2 of cleanroom space and state-of-the-art research equipment. MESA+ has an internationally appealing and multidisciplinary approach by combining physics, electrical engineering, chemistry, materials science and mathematics.

  • You develop a distinctive research domain, and lead and further build the neuromorphic team in the group NE;
  • You spend your time 50/50 on teaching and research. A reduced teaching load in the beginning years is the norm;
  • You give lectures in English, in several educational programs in Electrical Engineering and/or Computer Science. Mastering the Dutch language is not a prerequisite, but naturally a long term goal;
  • We strongly encourage a high degree of responsibility and independence, while collaborating with close colleagues, researchers and other university staff.

  • Affinity with both theoretical as experimental work and experience with teaching and advising students;
  • Excellent communication skills, like to connect with people and can form a bridge between people with different backgrounds;
  • Proficiency in English.
