Job description

The Department of Quantitative Economics (QE) of the School of Business and Economics (SBE) has a vacancy for a 4-year PhD position. As a PhD you are expected to write a PhD thesis in one of the fields of expertise of the department. Topics include econometrics, operations research, actuarial sciences, and economic theory, with a strong focus on quantitative and analytical methods. Both fundamental research as well as applied topics are possible, depending on your interests.

You will contribute to research by publishing in international top journals in one or more of the fields of interest to the QE department. You also have a light task in teaching (maximally 20% of the position), in which you are expected to contribute to education by tutoring courses in, depending on your area of expertise, mathematics, statistics, or operations research. You will also be part of the Graduate School of Business and Economics (GSBE) that coordinates SBE’s PhD programme.

Requirements

Profile of the candidate:

  • has (or is close to completion of) a 2-year MSc degree in Econometrics, Operations Research, Mathematical Economics, or a related field;
  • has an interest in doing research;
  • is an enthusiastic and cooperative colleague, who is willing to collaborate with the colleagues in the QE department;
  • has excellent command of English (oral and writing), in particular since all teaching is in English.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 4-year PhD position.

The appointment concerns a fixed-term 4-year contract. Remuneration will be according to standard salary levels for PhD students starting with a salary of €2.325,00 with a yearly growth to € 2.972,00 gross a month (based on a full-time appointment). Each year the standard salary is supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% of the yearly gross income.

You have to be willing to move to (the vicinity of) Maastricht. If you do not already live in Maastricht (or its direct surroundings), you will be eligible for an allowance for moving costs. Secondary employment conditions might apply such as a pension scheme, a corporate fitness plan, a bicycle scheme, 232 hours of yearly leave hours, and partially paid parental leave.
