Job description

Inherited metabolic disorders are a group of more than a 1000 different conditions caused by a genetic defect in metabolism. Patients with an inherited metabolic disease deserve an early diagnosis as well as effective and optimal treatment. Detrimental effects of the disease can only be prevented or mitigated through individualized treatment and tailored care. Biomarkers are among the key factors to make progress in this direction.

Major recent technological advances have resulted in holistic methods analyzing an impressive number of molecules in patient cells and body fluids simultaneously. Collectively called "omics", such methods can analyze small molecules (metabolites, metabolomics), glycans on proteins (glycoproteomics) or complex lipids (lipidomics). Each individual omics technology will reflect a different kind of disease mechanism and therefore provide complementary information to better understand molecular disease mechanisms.

Tasks and responsibilities
  • To coordinate data stewardship activities within UMD in collaboration with the Data steward of the X-omics initiative (led by prof. Alain van Gool). The X-omics data steward is located at the Center for Molecular and Biomolecular Informatics (CMBI, Radboudumc), led by prof. dr. Peter-Bram 't Hoen.
  • To harmonize data interpretation workflows for omics across UMD centers and develop novel bioinformatics solutions for comparison and interpretation of multi-omics data of patient cohorts, as generated within UMD centers.

Requirements

We are looking for a highly talented, motivated, enthusiastic and ambitious data scientist with:
  • A PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or related discipline.
  • Extensive experience in:
    • Bioinformatics and large data analysis.
    • Working with multi-omics projects, preferably mass-spec based such as metabolomics.
    • Strong programming skills (Python, Java, R).
    • Demonstrated interest in building computational workflows.A keen interest in translating scientific knowledge into applied research.
  • Knowledge of FAIR principles, data storage infrastructure and different technologies for access and sharing.
  • Ability for independent and critical thinking.
  • Excellent communication and networking skills by collaboration with UMD experts (in disease, omics and bioinformatics).
  • An open and professional working attitude.
  • Goal oriented team player mentality with experience in working in a multidisciplinary team.

Conditions of employment

Employer

Radboudumc

United for Metabolic Diseases (UMD) is a unique National research collaboration to improve patient care for children and adults with a metabolic disorder. One of the major aims is to establish UMD-wide access to advanced technology for omics-based biomarker discovery in order to improve diagnosis, prognosis, patient stratification and therapy monitoring for patients with inherited metabolic disorders. As part of this aim, a data scientist Bioinformatics will be positioned at the Radboudumc and collaborate with metabolic experts within the six UMD centers.
