About ROA and its director

ROA is a research centre of Maastricht University’s School of Business and Economics, established in 1986. Through its research, the institute aims to improve the understanding of the relationship between education and the labour market. The institute currently has a staff of 50 persons.

The research is rooted in five programs, each headed by a program director/professor. The program directors together with the controller constitute ROA’s management team. As the director, you will work with members of the management team and other senior staff to attract funding for fundamental as well as commissioned research and seek fruitful collaboration in academic and policy networks both at the national and international level.

Currently, the task of director is carried out by two persons who are also program directors. If you prefer so, you can also share your director’s role with another member of the management team.

The role of chairholder

The position of ROA director is linked to the chair of Education and the Labour Market. In your capacity as chairholder, you will supervise PhD students and play a supporting role in initiating and coordinating research projects that have societal impact and lead to publications in (top-rated) scientific journals. All this with a view to foster the visibility and reputation of ROA.

Teaching duties are limited and open for discussion.

 You have:

• Demonstrated experience in managing a research group, and experience in motivating and inspiring both junior and senior staff;
• A strong international reputation as a researcher as demonstrated by publications in the field of education and labour economics in highly-ranked journals;
• Proven experience in attracting external funding;
• A clear interest in the combination of fundamental and commissioned research, multidisciplinary collaboration and the societal impact of scientific research;
• A clear vision on future developments in the research fields of ROA;
• An extensive international academic and policy network;
• Excellent interpersonal, intercultural, and leadership skills.

The Research Centre for Education and the Labour Market

The overarching theme of ROA’s research is the acquisition and depreciation of human capital over the life course in relation to the dynamics of the labour market. The centre has five research programmes:

• Education and Transition to Work
• Training and Employment
• Health, Skills, and Inequality
• Labour Market Dynamics
• Human Capital in the Region

The first three programmes focus on education and training at individual and organisational levels. The other two programmes focus on individual and organisational behaviour, and the interaction between the two, in national and regional labour markets.
