The successful candidates are expected to prepare, coordinate, and teach new courses on Modern (that is post-1550) literature and culture in the English language at Bachelor’s and Master’s levels; to conduct university-level research in that field; and supervise Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral students in the same area. The candidate is expected to develop new ideas in research and education, and acquire funding (independently or jointly with other colleagues) for future research.

The selected candidate will work with other colleagues in the Modern English Literature and Culture chair group (MLK) organized within the Department of English Language and Culture in the Faculty of Arts, alongside chair groups in Medieval Literature and English Linguistics. MLK consists of an interdisciplinary team of researchers collaborating with other departments in the faculty and/or funded by externally raised funds and international guest-researchers. The team covers many areas of English literature and culture, from the Early Modern period to the contemporary era, including Romanticism, Victorian literature, Modernism, and twentieth-century literature.

The position will involve a teaching load of 60% (including administration) and 40% research. The successful candidates should demonstrate their ability to connect effectively to ongoing research projects and contribute to the faculty’s excellence in teaching and research. Teaching and research interests in American literature or Global literatures in English may be advantageous. In addition, MLK contributes substantially to the ‘Writing, Editing, and Mediating’ strand in the Master’s programme, and experience with creative writing and/or publishing technologies may be desirable.

Candidates for the position must have:

- a PhD in English literature or closely related field
- a demonstrable knowledge of English literature and culture after 1550 and an interest in developments in contemporary teaching and research
- teaching and supervision experience at university level with either a relevant teaching qualification or preparedness to acquire the University Teaching Qualification
- proven experience in designing and coordinating courses at university level
- excellent research abilities, as evidenced by a publication record in international peer-reviewed publications/publishers
- an ability to work in a multidisciplinary context
- organizational competence and excellent communication skills
- a willingness to obtain research funding grants
- knowledge of Dutch or willingness to learn within a reasonable period of time is one of the conditions for tenure (CEFR B2 for reading and listening, and CEFR B1 for writing and speaking) within two years; and
- an ability to meet deadlines and produce work of a consistently high standard.

Fixed-term contract: 24 months.

We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:
- a salary dependent on qualifications and work experience, with a minimum of € 3,637 (scale 11) to a maximum of € 5,656 (scale 12) gross per month for a full-time position
- an 8% holiday allowance and an annual year-end bonus of 8.3%
- minimum of 29 holidays and additional 12 holidays in case of full-time appointment
- a fulltime position; the appointment will initially be on a temporary basis for two years and will become a permanent position subject following a positive Results and Development assessment, from the second year of your appointment.
