The group Mathematics of Computational Science has a vacancy for a Ph.D. student to work on a breakthrough development in the numerical simulation of photonic crystals. The objective of the project is to develop novel numerical methods for solving large eigenvalue problems for 3D Maxwell’s equations to understand the optical properties of finite-size photonic crystals. Taking carefully into account the geometry of the considered photonic crystals, we will work on improved, size-independent approximations that, for the first time, allow the simulation of large, realistic crystals.
This project is part of a larger research programme, in which you will closely cooperate with several academic partners with a strong international reputation from the MESA+ research institute and the Debye Institute in Utrecht. An active exchange with the academic partners is a major objective in this project. The focal point of the research is numerical analysis and method development. We offer full access to state-of-the-art computer resources.
Type of work: 40% method development, 30% numerical analysis, 20% efficient implementation, 10% educational tasks.

The faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) comprises three disciplines that shape Information and Communication Technology. ICT is more than communication. In almost every product we use mathematics, electronics and computer technology and ICT now contributes to all of societies' activities. The faculty works together intensively with industrial partners and researchers in the Netherlands and abroad and conducts extensive research for external commissioning parties and funders. The research which enjoys a high profile both at home and internationally, has been accommodated in the multidisciplinary research institutes: Mesa+ Institute, TechMed Centra and Digital Society Institute.
