-Assistant Professor: € 3,637 – € 5,656 gross
-Associate Professor: € 5,039 – € 6,738 gross

The department of Law, Technology, Markets, and Society (LTMS, home of TILT and TILEC) carries out multi-disciplinary research concerning the regulation of socio-technical change. The Department is seeking to recruit an expert in intellectual property law and the regulation of innovation, an important pillar for the Department’s vision. 

Job description
LTMS invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor position in the field of intellectual property law with a focus on technology regulation. The successful candidate is expected to research, teach, and supervise (post-graduate) students in the field of Intellectual Property, the regulation of technology and innovation. (S)he is expected to develop new ideas in research and education, and acquire funding (independently or jointly with other colleagues) for future research. Within a reasonable period of time, it is expected that the successful candidate will assume a leading role in the management of the IP-cluster within LTMS. These activities should help LTMS with the further expansion of its intellectual property rights law research and education, and contribute to the rethinking of intellectual property rights law necessitated by recent technological transformations. The usual research carried out at LTMS is both conceptual and fundamental, as well as applied in the form of studies commissioned by third parties (government, EU, and private parties). The position will consist of 60-80% research and 20-40% teaching.

The successful candidate:

  • has a PhD in intellectual property law or a related relevant legal field; 
  • is a specialist in intellectual property law, preferably with expertise in copyright and patent law as they relate to digital technologies, or at least with demonstrable expertise in one of these fields and clear motivation to expand her/his expertise to the other one; 
  • has an interest in competition law (interest in broader economic regulation is an advantage); 
  • has a strong publication record commensurate with the stage at which the candidate finds her- or himself in her or his career; 
  • has experience with or is demonstrably interested in working in an interdisciplinary environment (affinity and experience should be evident from the candidates’ education or past performance in teaching, research or publications); 
  • is highly proficient in the English language;
  • has several years of international experience; 
  • has an UTQ- / teaching skills certificate or commits to qualify for UTQ-certificate within 2 years; 
  • demonstrates scientific integrity; 
  • has demonstrable experience in acquiring research funding; 
  • contributes to an open and diversified culture of excellence.

Fixed-term contract: for a fixed period of 5 years.

The gross salary for an Assistant Professor varies between €3,637 and €5,656 per month (full time) based on scale 11 and 12 of the Collective Labor Agreement Dutch Universities and for an Associate Professor between €5,039 and €6,738 based on scale 13 and 14. Classification in the applicable salary scale will be based on the candidate's profile (relevant experience). Employees recruited from abroad may be eligible for the 30% tax facility for a limited period – this means that 30% of your salary will be paid as a tax-free reimbursement. 

Tilburg Law School offers you an employment agreement for a fixed period of 5 years and 0.8 to 1.0 fte (32 to 40 hours per week). During this period of temporary employment, you engage in systematic development activities in consultation with your manager. Towards the end of the 5-year period, you and your manager discuss the next step in your career – this could be tenure within Tilburg Law School. 

You are entitled to a holiday allowance amounting to 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% of your gross yearly income. If you work 40 hours per week, you receive 41 days of paid recreational leave per year.
