The
Jheronimus Academy of Data Science (
JADS) is a unique cooperation between Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) and Tilburg University (TiU). JADS provides a knowledge infrastructure that aims at providing innovative educational programs, data science research, and support for business and society, with activities centered on the question how to take advantage of data in a responsible way. JADS is active at three locations: besides the campuses of TU/e and TiU, a vibrant campus fully dedicated to data science is located in the former monastery Mariënburg in Den Bosch.
The Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng) program Data Science is a two-year post-master program, located in Den Bosch. It qualifies graduates with an MSc degree in, for instance, mathematics, statistics, or computer science to become top-level professionals. Such professionals help industry and business in their decision-making processes based on real, actionable data or become innovative entrepreneurs in the data science ecosystem. The program focuses on teaching trainees to apply knowledge to solve real world problems, to know what knowledge is relevant, and to acquire missing knowledge fast. Blended learning, project centered education, close cooperation with external partners from industry and society, extensive training on soft skills, and personalized programs are the central ingredients in the program. The second year is dedicated to a project in industry or society. Projects have a wide variety, ranging from optimizing product portfolio's for retail companies via understanding trends in health of the population of Noord-Brabant to for instance smart building and enabling the energy transition.
The program has been highly successful so far, with much interest from trainees and industry. As of 2018, about forty trainees participate in the program. There is need to expand the current staff with an additional member with a focus on developing the second year of the program.
