Job description

FASoS is seeking an assistant professor with demonstrated excellence in teaching and research in Cultural Policy and Management. 

You will contribute to teaching and coordination of courses and to supervision of internships, projects and theses in the BA and MA programmes of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, most notably in the MA Arts and Heritage: Policy, Education and Management and the MA in Media Studies: Digital Cultures. The division of teaching and research duties follows the regular division used at the Faculty of 60% teaching and management and 40% research. The research time can be extended through external fundraising.

Research is carried out within the context of the Research Institute for Arts and Social Sciences (see: https://www.maastrichtuniversity.nl/research/fasos-research-institute)

and, in particular, relating to the interdisciplinary research programme Arts, Media and Culture (AMC) (see: https://www.maastrichtuniversity.nl/fasos-research-institute/research-organisation/arts-media-and-culture). You are expected to develop international research projects and to attract external funding that is related to the faculty’s core research themes. Furthermore, you will be affiliated to the interfaculty Maastricht Centre for Arts, and Culture, Conservation and Heritage (MACCH) (see https://www.maastrichtuniversity.nl/research/maastricht-centre-arts-and-culture-conservation-and-heritage). You will collaborate with colleagues from the Faculty of Law and the School of Business and Economics and will be involved in the co-organisation of workshops and conferences related to MACCH.

Requirements

You have a PhD degree in a relevant humanities or social science discipline (e.g. (art)history, sociology, anthropology, economics, and related fields of inquiry such as cultural studies, theatre/film/media/museum studies, library and information studies) with a focus on cultural policy and management. You are particularly encouraged to apply when you are also versed in the practice of cultural policy and/or cultural management and when you have demonstrable methodological experience into cultural policy analysis and evaluation. Sufficient knowledge of developments in the cultural field is a prerequisite, and experience with innovative approaches to digital delivery, practices, or methods including public engagement, digital archives/collections, and issues surrounding digital copyright, ethics, and ownership is a distinct advantage. Fluency in English is a prerequisite (Cambridge English Proficiency, level C2, oral and written), while non-Dutch speaking applicants should be willing to learn Dutch (basic level). Having relevant work experience in an academic position after obtaining the PhD is a plus.

You are an experienced and enthusiastic teacher and have demonstrated ability in thesis supervision and teaching roles. Experience with course development is an asset. You are able to stimulate student learning and to maximize student participation in our system of small-scale problem based learning (PBL). Experience with teaching in international classrooms is preferable.

You display outstanding quality in research and have demonstrable affinity with interdisciplinary approaches. You have a relevant international network, in line with the research programmes of FASoS, and a track record or potential for grant acquisition. International peer-reviewed academic publications are imperative.

You have an open, effective communication style. You are a team player and you have participated actively in working groups, committees or project teams within an academic context. You can critical reflect on management styles in an academic environment and are ready to fulfil an administrative role in the faculty. 

Conditions of employment

Maastricht University provides an attractive, internationally-oriented academic environment where young people receive an advanced education and scholars conduct first-rate research.

Initially, candidates are employed on a temporary contract as assistant professor (level 2) and agree to specific development goals. Five years into the appointment, candidates will be evaluated and if the development goals have been met, promoted to assistant professor (level 1) on a permanent contract. The evaluation can be brought forward if criteria are met earlier. On the candidate’s request the evaluation can be deferred in case of special personal circumstances, such as pregnancy leave, parental leave or chronic illness.

The workload will be the normal workload for the position of assistant professor. Currently this implies 60% teaching – and 40% research activities.

Remuneration will be according to standard salary levels, depending on education and relevant work experience. This implies a minimum of € 3.637,-- and a maximum of € 4.978,-- gross per month for a full-time appointment of 38 hours per week (salary scale 11, Dutch Universities Conditions of Employment).

Each year the standard salary is supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.

The university’s relocation policy stipulates that the selected candidate needs to move to (the vicinity of) Maastricht. If not already living in Maastricht (or its direct surroundings), (s)he will be eligible for an allowance for moving costs or an allowance for alternative housing.  

Other secondary conditions include e.g. a pension scheme and partially paid parental leave as well as a shared office space and a PC.
